Chapter 10
At the back of the cottage were acres of beautiful garden. Esther had paid to have a landscaper fly in from Scotland, specifically to design the place. Jane had asked her why she went to all the trouble when she could have had anyone in the United States do it. Her reply was simple: “You don’t stand out by doing the same as others.”
She wanted people to feel as if they had visited Scotland when they stayed with her. Trees surrounded the entire property; the yard had rolling greens with small ponds dotted around and rock structures that were meant to look like castle ruins. The sound of rushing water could be heard coming from a stream that cut through the yard. Butterflies fluttered from flower to flower. The entire yard was a masterpiece of color.
“So why did you want to see me?” Jane asked.
“I didn’t kill him. I know some people are going to say I did but I didn’t, Jane. You have to know that now. He was alive when I visited him last night and when I left.”
“Isn’t that what all killers say?” Jen piped up from behind them. Jane tossed a scowl over her shoulder and Jen went back to looking at the garden.
“I know you probably have a lot of questions.”
“Why did you leave the hospital?”
She shrugged. “I knew that I was holding up production. At the best of times Shawn is tough guy to deal with but he’d already phoned me three times while I was staying there warning me that if the show sank, so would my career. He was right. That’s the downside to being an actress. It doesn’t matter how bad the script was, or even if the director was a complete amateur. Critics can bury any TV show or film with just a few lines, and… our careers along with it.”
“So he was worried about that?”
She picked a purple flower and spun it in her hand. “We all worry about that. There is a misconception that because we have money that our lives are easy. Trust me, they’re not. We get paid millions but that doesn’t mean we’re happy. Most of my actor friends are on uppers and downers, and abusing alcohol, just to stay on an even keel. I’ve been in rehab twice. It’s just the nature of what we do. The film industry is always moving at breakneck speed. When you are working one movie, the studios are thinking about the next and the next. They have an insatiable appetite and well… not all of us can keep up with that. I did for a long time and then just broke down and booked into a rehab.”
Jane stepped onto a small wooden bridge and they stopped there and watched the water flow beneath them. “I can’t imagine what that’s like. What about Shawn Chilvers? Caleb was saying that Shawn was a big drinker? And that perhaps that one day it would be the death of him. Suicide I mean.
