Chapter Twenty-Three
The constant barrage of emotions threatened to overwhelm Topaz once again, but this time, she was able to resist. Her concern for her companions helped her stay strong in the face of Johnnyâs grief, Jenniferâs loss, and Satanaâs fear of her own dark impulses. Still, the situation was dire. At this rate, Lucifer wouldnât need to defeat them. Theyâd all end up huddled in a depressed pile on a random street corner.
She needed to cheer them up. Their biggest strength was their ability to work together, but that would do them no good against Lucifer if they were all too busy doubting themselves. Theyâd hate her for being the annoying ray of sunshine, but she was used to that. Once, Satana had thrown a pan at her for singing too early in the morning. It hadnât bothered her. She had excellent reflexes.
For all her hotheadedness, Satana was usually the easiest mark. The demoness rebounded quickly from her dark moments, probably because she had so many of them. Sheâd gotten good at pulling herself out of the doldrums, especially with the help of her handy neighborhood empath. So Topaz sidled over to her, sliding an arm around her waist as they followed the Hellphyr down the street.
Satana looked at her like sheâd sprouted an extra head.
âWhat?â she asked.
âYouâve been really quiet,â Topaz observed.
âJust trying to avoid going full demon and biting everyoneâs heads off.â
âCome on,â said Topaz, giving her a psychic nudge. âYou did what was necessary to save us. Iâd argue that itâs the least demonic thing you could have done.â
âAre you blind? Itâs one thing to change forms, but I canât believe how big I got. That was like my demon form times a million. You donât get much more demonic than growing to twelve feet tall and turning red.â
âYou didnât turn red,â Topaz said.
âDetails, details.â Satana waved a hand. âJust leave me alone for a while, OK? I never realized I could do that, and thatâs going to take some getting used to. I need to deal with this on my own.â
Topaz gave her a quick squeeze and withdrew. She didnât take the rejection personally. After all, Satana had a point. Topaz couldnât understand what she was going through. Even though she could sense the conflicting instincts that sometimes threatened to tear the half-demon apart, sheâd never experienced them herself. She didnât want to, either.
She dropped back to walk with Jennifer, whose attention was torn between the Hellphyr and the Tome. Sheâd strapped the magical book to her chest to leave her hands free, but she might as well not have bothered. Her arms had been wrapped around it ever since theyâd left the house, like it was a precious baby she needed to protect from the world at large.
âYou OK?â asked Topaz.
âFine,â Jennifer replied in the briefest of speeches. âIâm willing to listen, but not really interested in talking right now.â
Topaz debated pushing the subject, but she didnât want to risk unsettling the sorceress further. Plus,
