CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

The next day, Scarlett decided she’d waited long enough for whoever had taken Dusk Runner to make their intentions known. She was done waiting. It was time to act.

To that end, she and Runeclaw portaled to the pavement in front of the Spell Riders’ garage. It was the strangest sight she’d ever seen at the place. No sound of machinery. No shouting, no working. The garage was empty. Confused and maybe worried, she called, “Hello?”

Her concern vanished a moment later when Maddox came through a door in the back and shouted, “Scarlett. You’re here.”

She laughed as he reached her and wrapped her in a hug. “I was worried.” She gestured at the garage. “Nothing’s going on. I don’t think I’ve ever seen it like that.”

He laughed and wrapped an arm around her shoulder to propel her into motion. “Sundays are for relaxing, even for hard-working folk like us. Come on, everyone is out back.”

He took her through the door he’d used into a spacious grassy area behind the garage. All the Spell Riders she knew of were there, their work attire replaced by comfortable clothes with leather jackets and vests arranged in a neat pile on a nearby table. Several were involved in a game of horseshoes on one side of the space. Others threw lawn darts on the other side, which seemed like a bad idea given the beer bottles on the table beside them.

“We’ve got meat products on that grill.” Maddox pointed at a huge cooking surface manned by two Spell Riders. “And vegetables only on that one.” He pointed at a smaller one, being tended by one Spell Rider. “We have a couple of vegetarians and one straight vegan, so we keep the two cooking surfaces separate.”

She grinned. “But you’re not willing to give up meat to suit their sensibilities.”

“Hell, no. Their sensibilities are theirs to deal with. Me, I like a nice bratwurst on a hot summer day. Add some mustard, some sauerkraut, maybe a little celery salt, then you’re really talking.”

He pulled his wand from a back pocket, used it to flip open the top of a cooler, and summoned a bottle of beer to his other hand. He shoved the wand away, popped the cap, and handed it to her. “Can’t stop by without having a drink. House rules.”

“What if I don’t drink?”

“Then we have lemonade. But I’ve seen you drink. So, get to it.”

Snow approached and knelt to pat Runeclaw. “Hello, Guardian.”

Runeclaw batted his hand. “Greetings, Snow.” As Snow straightened, Runeclaw jumped onto Scarlett’s shoulder.

Snow asked, “Is Maddox causing trouble?”

Scarlett replied, “Not really. Just being himself.”

Maddox quipped, “It’s tough when you’re the most handsome.”

Snow countered, “If you’re what qualifies as handsome, I’ll stick with being the smartest.”

Scarlett chuckled.

He continued. “You seem stressed, Scarlett. What’s up?”

She scowled and took a drink before replying. “We’re having a few challenges in Provo.”

Maddox remarked, “Snow is happy to help you blow some more things up. In fact, eager might be the right word.”

Snow nodded. “He’s not wrong.
