CHAPTER ELEVEN

Once the spells were complete, we had just enough time before the orcish mercenaries arrived to move to a spot with a bit more cover. It wasn’t great terrain, to be honest. Sharp, angular rocks stabbed up through the permafrost, making the ground hard and uncomfortable to lay flat on. There were a few slate boulders that reminded me of ugly, multilayered pasteries, and a few ditches where either glaciers or frozen rivers had carved shallow troughs into the ground.

So, yeah. Not great fighting ground, but was far better than being instantly ripped to shreds on open tundra. Once in place, I split the men into two lopsided groups. The larger collection held back, ready to provide a base of fire that could, hopefully, overwhelm any targets that showed themselves by sheer volume of bullets. I called them Anvil Group .

The remainder was a fireteam of five men, led by Colonel Pine. They’d be our pointmen - Hammer Group. Not quite the eyes and ears of our unit, but certainly vital to success.

Through corpse lights, the scouts and I watched the mercenary orcs crest the last hill between us at a flat run. Their pace was relentless, and their weapons plain to see, as they approached us faster than any mortal would have dreamed of approaching on foot.

I sucked in a breath to steady myself as I caught sight of those hulking mercenary orcs. The shortest amongst them was seven feet tall, while the two bastards lugging around the pair of M2 Browning anti-aircraft guns were ten feet tall if they were an inch.

Though we had a few rocks to hide behind and some ditches to duck into, I could already tell that the orcs had enough hardware to pin us down, grind away at us, and finally wipe us off the map if we fought using anything close to standard tactics.

I’ll say this for scouts, though. We’re not line soldiers, or artillerymen, or tank drivers, or guards.

We’re spies.

Thieves.

Infiltrators.

Rogues.

And none of the above will stand and fight if standard tactics are the only options.

As the mercenary orcs drew into range, I used a bit of iron magic to press my voice into every corpse light being used by the scouts around me.

“Anvil Group, harassing fire.” I said. “Nothing fancy. Aim for hearts and lungs.”

I almost immediately heard the soft thwpt … thwpt … thwpt of the scouts to my left and right taking slow, measured shots with fully suppressed rifles and ammunition. That slow, steady rate of fire was almost music to my ears. Pretty much all of the rifles being used at the moment had begun life as semiautomatic AR-15s that had been intended for the civilian market. And while the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms wasn’t to be trifled with while in the mortal world, most of the people that lived in Faerie had bigger things to worry about than U.S. federal agencies and regulatory bodies.

As a result, the scouts rifles had all been modified to fire in full automatic if needed.
