CHAPTER SEVENTEEN
Cait had spent a little more time at the house, only enough to discuss the conversations they hadnât been present for with her sisters before portaling back to Boston. She called Sabrina upon arrival, asking her to come over. Her next call was to arrange a pizza. While waiting for it to arrive, she said, Iâm afraid youâll have to stay outside tonight, buddy. I canât guarantee there wonât be cameras, and pretty much the whole world now knows that Deputy US Marshal Cait Keane has a dragon for a partner. It would be rather telling if the thief did, too.
His frown was audible. I donât like that.
Exterior surveillance is a good thing, anyway. You can let me know if trouble is inbound.
I get it. I still donât like it. Maybe you should buy me a costume, too. I could pretend to be a wolf. âBark, bark, growl. Iâm stupid.â
She turned with a frown and glared at him. He was curled up in a chair in the corner. Itâs an infiltration suit.
He lifted his chin and shook his head. Itâs a costume.
A knock on the door interrupted the conversation. Grabbing the cowl and the computer that fed the lenses, she showed them off to Sabrina after ushering her in and putting a glass of red wine in her hand. âWhat do you think?â
âIâll be right back.â Sabrina handed back the glass and left again. True to her word, she returned in a moment with a notebook computer and a bag unfamiliar to Cait. She tossed the bag on a chair, sat down again at the table, and examined the headpiece, turning it in all directions before finally lifting the object to peer at it from below. âThereâs the connection, at the base of it. Iâve never seen that sort of socket before.â
Cait replied, âThe man who did the suit said it had circuitry all through it. Do you want the other pieces?â
The infomancer shook her head, reached over to her bag, and extracted a connector with dangling wires. âNope. Iâve got whatever I need in here, Iâm sure.â She slotted one end into the computer and clipped the wires to the cowl.
A moment later, code started rolling on the notebookâs screen. Cait watched from behind Sabrina but couldnât make any sense out of it. She was quiet for as long as she could be but finally had to ask, âSo, what do you think?â
The infomancer sounded slightly distracted, her eyes still on the screen, as one hand gestured at the cowl and computer pack next to it. âThe hardware is cutting edge, for sure. I see thermal mode, a visual display of sound options, and magnification options for the lenses. Thatâs a great start. I can almost certainly make it even better over time if youâre comfortable with me working on it and maybe involving a friend.â
âThis is probably the only time Iâll use it.â
The other woman looked at her with an eyebrow raised. âFirst, you have valid reasons to stay in touch with this part of the cityâs population for your marshal gig.
