Chapter Eighteen
âSimon, can you sniff us a way out of here that doesnât involve me reducing it to rubble and keeps us from Silla at the door we entered?â I asked as we walked down the stone steps. Several vendors put out small fires and wailed over goods that had been singed.
His nose poked out, and he sniffed about.
âGo in the opposite direction of where we came in. Keep going when it gets dark, past all the merchants. Weâll come to a back door.â The nose disappeared.
âI know the way.â Drag stared at the ground. He hadnât looked up since he realized what Cait had done to him.
âThen go ahead and lead us.â I let go of his hand and looped my arm through his.
He shook his head. âFollow Simonâs directions.â
âFragile male ego,â Simon called, earning him a frown from Drag.
I choked back my laughter. Simon was spot on. I didnât want to pile on, though. Drag looked pitiful enough.
âWe have a dinner to get to,â I said as I followed Simonâs directions.
Once we were past the vendors, the area angled down and turned into a long dark hallway. It was much, much smaller than the rest of the alleys. Drag had to bend his head as we walked. I had a sneaking suspicion that we were undergroundâunder the city streets. A secret escape from the market.
âHow about a bouncing flame to light the way?â I asked lightly. I needed him back to his irritating self to face his father.
Drag came to a halt. I couldnât see his eyes in the dark, only the outline of him.
âRossi?â he asked, his voice tentative.
âYes?â
âThe star is believed to be one of the Pleiades stars. One of the seven sisters. When the seven are in alignment, the veil between life and death is at its thinnest, and communication can be made across the barrier,â he said in a rush like he might not have told me if he didnât tell me right then. âOne of the sisters was lost. Merope is said to have fallen to the earth. Orla has that stone.â
My heart ached for him as I began to understand his obsession. If he could get this Merope star, he could thin the veil between life and death. He could speak to his mother. Nora, the true one stone, the stone that he carried.
âDrag,â I stepped toward him, but he moved back.
âDonât mind Cait. She probably has a heart witch hidden somewhere who could see your true desires. She took advantage of that,â I said.
He nodded. âBut I almost gave her you.â
I shook my head. âI donât believe that. You wanted the two of us to meet, but you werenât going to turn me over to her. You didnât announce me as the one stone.â
I wanted to see his eyes so badly. I couldnât gauge his reactions in the dark. Which was likely why he picked this spot to talk.
âNow that I can think, Iâd have done whatever she told me to. I thought she held the answers I needed.
