CHAPTER 14

“Let’s see what we can find out,” Rufus said.

We were stationed outside the sporting goods store, hidden under a burned-out streetlamp. The lights were on in the shop, and I could clearly see the outline of a person as they walked around, more than likely closing up for the night.

“Do you think it’s Jody?” I asked.

“I do. Drove by earlier and saw him inside.”

“But now the blinds are pulled.”

“Right. I’m sure it’s still him, though.”

I settled back in the seat and watched the man’s outline move from one side of the store to the other. “So, what made you want to follow Jody first.”

“Good question.” Rufus ran his fingertips over the top of the steering wheel. “It was the way he acted the day of the altercation.”

“How was that?”

“Not as worried as I thought he should have been.”

“He seemed worried to me,” I replied, recalling the look of concern on Jody’s face.

“But he didn’t act. He let me take the reins. He has magic, too. Otherwise he wouldn’t have magical weaponry.”

“That he can sell to whomever he chooses,” I said, beginning to understand.

Rufus gave me a searching look. “Do you really think that a human can hold a weapon filled with magic and not feel anything?”

“I think it’s highly unlikely.”

“Me too. That’s why he’s on my radar.”

“Well then, let’s see what happens.”

As soon as the words were out of my mouth, the front door opened and Jody appeared. He locked the bolt, pulled a metal barricade down and secured it to the sidewalk.

He walked to a sleek SUV and got in, fired up the vehicle and started down Main.

“Here we go,” Rufus told me.

My heart pounded as Rufus fired up his own vehicle and we slid out of our spot.

“So, how are you going to make sure that Jody doesn’t see us?”

“Easy. With this.” He pulled an orb from his hand, whispered a few words and pressed it onto the dashboard. The entire inside of the SUV shimmered briefly before petering out. “That little bit of magic will cloak us from Jody. Other people, however, will be able to see us.”

“Thank goodness. I’d hate for one of them to hit us because we were invisible.”

“Exactly. That’s why I made sure that he’s the only one who’s blind to us. Now. Settle back and let’s see where we go.”

I eased back onto the seat, even though I expected some sort of action to happen at any moment. I didn’t know what, but I was waiting for something crazy to occur.

But as the lights from Main Street faded and the rows of houses turned to fallow cotton fields, I quickly started to realize that we were in for a drive, and a long one at that.

The cotton fields gave way to a lake with cabins alongside it, and it was at one of the cabins that Jody pulled in. Rufus slowed onto the road’s shoulder and parked a couple of houses down, where we could still keep an eye on Jody.
