CHAPTER 14
âLetâs see what we can find out,â Rufus said.
We were stationed outside the sporting goods store, hidden under a burned-out streetlamp. The lights were on in the shop, and I could clearly see the outline of a person as they walked around, more than likely closing up for the night.
âDo you think itâs Jody?â I asked.
âI do. Drove by earlier and saw him inside.â
âBut now the blinds are pulled.â
âRight. Iâm sure itâs still him, though.â
I settled back in the seat and watched the manâs outline move from one side of the store to the other. âSo, what made you want to follow Jody first.â
âGood question.â Rufus ran his fingertips over the top of the steering wheel. âIt was the way he acted the day of the altercation.â
âHow was that?â
âNot as worried as I thought he should have been.â
âHe seemed worried to me,â I replied, recalling the look of concern on Jodyâs face.
âBut he didnât act. He let me take the reins. He has magic, too. Otherwise he wouldnât have magical weaponry.â
âThat he can sell to whomever he chooses,â I said, beginning to understand.
Rufus gave me a searching look. âDo you really think that a human can hold a weapon filled with magic and not feel anything?â
âI think itâs highly unlikely.â
âMe too. Thatâs why heâs on my radar.â
âWell then, letâs see what happens.â
As soon as the words were out of my mouth, the front door opened and Jody appeared. He locked the bolt, pulled a metal barricade down and secured it to the sidewalk.
He walked to a sleek SUV and got in, fired up the vehicle and started down Main.
âHere we go,â Rufus told me.
My heart pounded as Rufus fired up his own vehicle and we slid out of our spot.
âSo, how are you going to make sure that Jody doesnât see us?â
âEasy. With this.â He pulled an orb from his hand, whispered a few words and pressed it onto the dashboard. The entire inside of the SUV shimmered briefly before petering out. âThat little bit of magic will cloak us from Jody. Other people, however, will be able to see us.â
âThank goodness. Iâd hate for one of them to hit us because we were invisible.â
âExactly. Thatâs why I made sure that heâs the only one whoâs blind to us. Now. Settle back and letâs see where we go.â
I eased back onto the seat, even though I expected some sort of action to happen at any moment. I didnât know what, but I was waiting for something crazy to occur.
But as the lights from Main Street faded and the rows of houses turned to fallow cotton fields, I quickly started to realize that we were in for a drive, and a long one at that.
The cotton fields gave way to a lake with cabins alongside it, and it was at one of the cabins that Jody pulled in. Rufus slowed onto the roadâs shoulder and parked a couple of houses down, where we could still keep an eye on Jody.
