Chapter 19

Xavier Batista

When we last saw young Xavier, he was dying of embarrassment over having offered his neck to a certain vampire detective. Xavier survived the aftermath of humiliation and self-flagellation, but only because he thought there was a chance that news of the cringe-inducing incident wouldn’t leave his bedroom. He was wrong, but didn’t know that yet, so he wasn’t feeling too terrible about himself or his reputation that Monday morning.

While Zara Riddle was at the hospital on Monday morning, eavesdropping on Dr. Ankh and Nick Lafleur, and various other Wisterians were doing various other Wisteria things, Xavier Batista was letting himself into the ground-floor offices of the WPD. The Permits one, not the Police one. He couldn’t even get into the Academy, remember?

Xavier’s coworkers wouldn’t be in for another half hour, which would give him enough time to call the blood analysis company about his delayed DNA results.

His call was answered by a recorded message, and he was put on hold.

He was left on hold for twenty-three minutes, during which time he grew more and more agitated. He was so agitated, he resorted to doing some of his permit clerk job duties, even though he wasn’t on the clock yet.

Finally, the saxophone music cut off, and an upbeat female voice said, “Thank you for calling BloodLines! This is Judy. How may I help you today?”

“I sent in my sample over—”

She cut him off abruptly but cheerfully. “Name and order number, please!”

“Xavier Batista,” he said. “And my order number—”

“Is that spelled with a Z?”

“An X.”

“Order number please!”

“I was going to tell you, but you cut me off—”

“Your thirteen digit order number can be found in your confirmation email, Mr. Batswan!”

“It’s Batista. Mr. Batista.” He heard his father’s voice coming from his mouth. Had he ever referred to himself as Mr. Batista? In the moment, it gave him a flash of Impostor Syndrome.

“Yes,” Judy said. “Xanadu Batswan. That is your name, sir. Order number please!”

He groaned and spelled out his entire name for Judy.

She eventually got it correct.

Then he gave her the 13-digit code. Multiple times. This was exactly why he hadn’t phoned the company until now. Was there a big company that didn’t have terrible phone support? He preferred to do these sorts of things by email, or not at all.

Judy managed to get all of his information typed into her computer. “That’s funny,” she said.

“Now what?”

“I don’t know,” she said in her perky voice. “There’s a mysterious note on your file.”

“Mysterious?” His heart sped up. He liked the sound of that.

“I’m supposed to transfer your call, but that’s what’s so funny. I don’t know this extension number. I wonder what it could mean.”

A mysterious note about an unknown extension number? His results had come in, and his DNA was full of magic! Xavier’s heart fluttered and trilled in his chest like an aggressive robin during mating season.

“Judy, what do you think it means?”

“Well, I’m not supposed to tell customers about this, but I heard at the staff Christmas party that, not long ago, we located the lost heir of a vast fortune.
