General Leeâs adjutant, Colonel Chilton, met Hunter as he approached the camp.
âYes, Colonel?â Hunter said, as they drew abreast.
âGeneral Lee asked that you stop by his tent, Doctor. Heâs located beneath those tall elms.â
Hunter thanked the adjutant and started for the generalâs tent, greeting soldiers as he went. General Lee was outside, talking with Stonewall Jackson, when Hunter walked up.
âYou wanted to see me, sir?â
âYes, Doctor. Both General Jackson and I are concerned about the boy. Is he all right?â
âYes, sir. He has a concussion and needed some stitches to close up the gash on his head. But heâll be fine.â
âThatâs good news.â Lee turned back to Jackson. âYou and General Longstreet meet with me first thing in the morning. Right after breakfast.â
âWeâll be here, sir,â Jackson said, and started to head back to his Corps. Hunter bid General Lee good evening and walked away beside his old friend.
When they were out of earshot from any of the soldiers, Jackson said, âHunter, unless I misunderstood what I heard in town today, that was your Jodie Lockwood, wasnât it?â
Hunterâs face was beaming. âIt was, Tom. God brought Jodie to me right there in the middle of Main Street!â
âAnd?â
âTom, you wonât believe it.â
âTry me.â
âSheâs been in love with me all this time. Said she knew it only days after arriving in Baltimore, but didnât think it proper to write to me, not knowing my feelings. She just prayed like Iâve been doing all these years. Sheâs had opportunities to marry, but God picked her for me, Tom ⦠and He saved her for me!â
Jackson halted abruptly.
âWhatâs wrong?â Hunter asked.
âYou did ask her to marry you, didnât you?â
âWell, no. I ⦠I didnât take it that far today. But when I see her again, I sure will. Fellow has to use a little discretion, Tom.â
âBut you have no doubt sheâll say yes?â
âNone whatsoever.â
A wide grin spread over Jacksonâs face. âWell, my friend, let me say that I sure am glad I was wrong. It looks like the Lord did have Jodie picked out for you. I hope the two of you will have a marriage as good as Mary Annaâs and mine.â
