General Lee’s adjutant, Colonel Chilton, met Hunter as he approached the camp.

“Yes, Colonel?” Hunter said, as they drew abreast.

“General Lee asked that you stop by his tent, Doctor. He’s located beneath those tall elms.”

Hunter thanked the adjutant and started for the general’s tent, greeting soldiers as he went. General Lee was outside, talking with Stonewall Jackson, when Hunter walked up.

“You wanted to see me, sir?”

“Yes, Doctor. Both General Jackson and I are concerned about the boy. Is he all right?”

“Yes, sir. He has a concussion and needed some stitches to close up the gash on his head. But he’ll be fine.”

“That’s good news.” Lee turned back to Jackson. “You and General Longstreet meet with me first thing in the morning. Right after breakfast.”

“We’ll be here, sir,” Jackson said, and started to head back to his Corps. Hunter bid General Lee good evening and walked away beside his old friend.

When they were out of earshot from any of the soldiers, Jackson said, “Hunter, unless I misunderstood what I heard in town today, that was your Jodie Lockwood, wasn’t it?”

Hunter’s face was beaming. “It was, Tom. God brought Jodie to me right there in the middle of Main Street!”

“And?”

“Tom, you won’t believe it.”

“Try me.”

“She’s been in love with me all this time. Said she knew it only days after arriving in Baltimore, but didn’t think it proper to write to me, not knowing my feelings. She just prayed like I’ve been doing all these years. She’s had opportunities to marry, but God picked her for me, Tom … and He saved her for me!”

Jackson halted abruptly.

“What’s wrong?” Hunter asked.

“You did ask her to marry you, didn’t you?”

“Well, no. I … I didn’t take it that far today. But when I see her again, I sure will. Fellow has to use a little discretion, Tom.”

“But you have no doubt she’ll say yes?”

“None whatsoever.”

A wide grin spread over Jackson’s face. “Well, my friend, let me say that I sure am glad I was wrong. It looks like the Lord did have Jodie picked out for you. I hope the two of you will have a marriage as good as Mary Anna’s and mine.”
