The Necra Desert was just as I remembered.
Scorching, lifeless, and endless rolling hills of sand. Looking back, it was a wonder that any of Roryâs crew had survived the place after Iâd left. This was where Sion and I had found each other, where our bonding had happened. It seemed so long ago, years even, yet it had only been months.
Weâd spent the entire previous day searching the desert for the location on the map, but weâd had little luck. Maren and I spent the night beside Sion, cuddling for warmth against the cold that darkness brought. We got up early and hit the sky, spending the last few hours looking for something other than sand.
âThis is pointless!â Maren yelled from behind me.
I glanced over my shoulder at her. Her face was flushed red and she was sweating. I had noticed that her fiery temperament was worst when she was either hungry or tired. Judging by the look on her face, I guessed she was both.
Find a spot to land, I told Sion. We need to take a break.
I thought youâd never ask, Sion replied. She swooped down and gradually descended until she landed gently atop one of the many dunes. It was nearly midday and there wasnât a cloud in the sky, which made flying around under the sun miserable. I could understand Marenâs discomfort, but it seemed to be taking a harder toll on her.
Maren retrieved a canteen from her bag and drank deeply, then sat down in the sand. I sat beside her and flinched as the heat from the sand penetrated my clothes. This had to be the most terrible place in existence. Well, aside from the Island of Lost Souls.
âI donât think weâre going to find anything,â Maren groaned. âWeâve lost time and now who knows where Demris is or what heâs done.â
I let her vent and didnât say anything.
How are you doing? I asked Sion. She was able to go longer without water than humans, but she still needed to stay hydrated.
Iâm fine for now, but my wings grow weary of flying.
I pulled the map out from my bag and unfolded it. Based on the few landmarks weâd encountered, I knew we were in the general area of where we should be looking.
âMaybe the wind has covered the place with sand,â I said.
âAnd maybe it doesnât even exist. Maybe the monks were liars on top of being dragon killers.â
I smiled at Marenâs snappy reply, but I was growing frustrated as well. My logic in coming to the desert first was that I assumed it would be the hardest place to find any clues, and Iâd been correct. That did little to bolster my flagging morale, though. Despite all that, I was trying to keep a positive attitude, but Maren was quickly making that difficult.
Sion perked her head up and tilted it to the side.
Do you hear anything? I asked her.
No, but I feel something. Thereâs magic pulsing, but itâs faint.
Where?
Sion closed her eyes and was silent for a long moment.
