Chapter Sixteen

“Interesting to see you here, Lenna,” Alasdair said, a menacing grin plastered on his rugged face.

I didn’t move. Unsure of what I could possibly say.

“How did you get here?” the purple fae said to a confident-looking Alasdair.

“Am I not welcome?” He opened his mouth in mock surprise.

“This is no place for fae of the water.”

“I agree.” He studied his surroundings, looking completely unimpressed. “However, I have reason to believe one of my water kin has been here. Delphinium, has your dear cousin returned to her second home?” Alasdair was speaking to the fae in purple.

“Alasdair. You are not welcome here, amongst the Flora clan.” She stood tall.

“But we are family after all. Your cousin is my dear niece.”

Delphinium didn’t falter. “She is not here,” she said, even more sternly than before.

“Ah, but this half fae is. What a sheer coincidence. She bears quite the resemblance to our dear Aster, does she not?” Alasdair’s tone was playful, Delphinium’s wasn’t.

“I’ve no idea what you are implying. Aster has been recluse for decades.”

“I’m implying that my sister’s daughter isn’t quite the recluse you claim. I am implying that this half witch may be her blood. Why else is she here?” He gestured toward me.

“I am searching for my mother.” I spoke up. “But her name isn’t Aster. It’s Evelyn.”

“There are no missing fae by the name of Evelyn, my dear child. And I’ve met with the only two fae in this dimension with a name sounding similar. Neither abandoned a child. They swore it on their own light.”

I looked at Alasdair, and then to Delphinium. Her eyes confirmed his words.

“You have her eyes,” Alasdair said. “And she had my sister’s eyes. The same green color that my twin’s eyes were, similar to mine but darker. I see you, Lenna. You are my blood. Your mother abandoned you just as she abandoned her duty.”

Horror struck my body. This cruel fae claimed to be my kin. My mother’s uncle. And she was accused of fleeing her duty. What had that been, exactly? Was she really the girl in the fairy tale? And did that make Alasdair the cruel uncle?

My mind was spinning with so many thoughts that I began to feel faint.

“Delphinium, bring me Aster when she returns. This realm reeks of her. I know she has been here. I can sense her magic.” He closed his eyes and inhaled deeply. “It’s still strong. Good. Time remains for her to meet her destiny.”

“What destiny?” I asked.

“That isn’t for you to know.” He spoke to me as if I was some annoying child asking questions beyond my comprehension. “You were better off without her. She will only disappoint you. Aster thinks of no one but herself.” His eyes were dark with rage.

“And who are you thinking of?” I challenged.

“I am thinking of the entire fae population. Do not question my loyalty. I shall be king—the survival of the fae is all I care about.” My question had enraged him even more.

“Does that include me?”

“Yes,” he said through gritted teeth.
