LEARNING FROM EACH OTHER

Working on projects internationally raises critical questions about what we are doing and why. Are we joining a team to work collaboratively? Are we sharing information and practices? Are we exporting our expertise? Because of the technical nature of this project, before I arrived a number of scientists had been invited to join the team, and the restoration of the river engaged many different disciplines: ecologists, hydrologists, microbiologists, and archaeologists. Arriving on a project of this scope with so much on-the-ground information and science, the job of the landscape architect is not to make a proposal but to get everyone together and help synthesize. Maybe the distance of the foreigner helps orient the group. After a few days in Chengdu I realized that it was not just river water that was going to be restored; it was also some traditional practices that had fallen out of favor.
