Twenty-Four

In the blink of an eye, Monday rolled around. Win trudged back into school, armed with new information, and burdened with memories of a time where she’d only been an infant, causing heaviness in her step.

Upon waking on Sunday morning, Ben abruptly whisked Alice off for a day out to clear their heads after the ordeal the day before. Win knew it was snippy and selfish if she complained. She couldn’t stand to see her mother in any kind of turmoil. She’d only just gotten her back, and now they were avoiding her.

“Dad, please let me see Mom,” Win pleaded the morning before they left. Ben avoided her gaze, packing up snacks, and bundling Alice into the car before wagging a finger in his daughter’s face.

“She’s had enough, Win. I don’t know what you think you’ll achieve by pushing her.”

Win boiled inside, and willed down her temper, saying shortly, “How about the truth?”

Ben glared at her, exasperated. “Why do you keep on pushing? Don’t you understand? I just got her home. We were making progress before….”

Win’s eyes flew wide as he snapped his mouth shut. “Before I came back?”

Ben groaned, flung a coat over his arm, and headed for the car, where her mother waited, strapped into the front seat. “I didn't mean that. Win…some truths just need to stay buried.”

In History class, Ella grabbed a seat next to her, and through a series of whispered communication behind hands and raised books, Win managed to recount most of her experience.

Ella listened, then after a long pause, she whispered, “Have you told, Luke?”

“No,” Win hissed. “Are you crazy? How can I drop that into the conversation?”

Ella agreed. “He’s been through a lot. This would hurt him…finding out he had a half-sister. It's so sad.”

Ella’s musing was the very thing that made Win’s blood run cold, something she didn’t like to imagine. It was linked to Spencer, and she couldn’t shake off Olivia’s hopeless cry. There’s something wrong with him…

Had he been bad, even then? Win shuddered, remembering the pale scars down Evan’s back. Someone had hurt Evan in the past, and it made Win gag to imagine what she could be going through. When Win questioned Rowan the next day, her sister avoided the subject. Win suspected Rowan was desperate to deal with this herself. Evan was quiet, tired, bordering on exhaustion. Rowan knew something was wrong, but in true Rowan fashion, she was shutting down.

“I have to try again,” Win said as their teacher closed the door, signaling the start of the class. Ella nudged her, shaking her head.

“Use the flame? No way, Win. Evan said not to. You need to rest between jumps.”

“You didn’t see the marks on her back. I have to try again. I feel like this is all linked to Katie…”

“You don’t know it's linked to Katie,” Ella said behind her hands. “Though…your visions do tend to mean something.”

“Exactly! I can’t wait for this to come to me. Though…bursting into flames really isn’t appealing.”

Mr. Rainer paused at Win’s desk, placing a note by her open textbook.
