As Ronda yawned, her first thought swam groggily in the murky quicksand of a sleepy mind. The thought, she knew, would sink back into the oblivion of sleep if she didnât work at saving it. What was it again? A downpour . . . raining cats and mice . . . birds and bees . . . some equally clichéd group of small life forms. Grimacing drowsily, Ronda turned over in bed, not quite ready to open her eyes. It was-raining, that was all.
No, the sound wasnât quite right for rain. Sighing reluctantly, she opened her eyes to look around. Chaseâs dress uniform lying across a nearby armchair was the first thing she saw.
Chase! She sat bolt upright in bed, pulling the sheet up to cover her bare breasts. The sound that wasnât quite right for rain was exactly right for the shower. Her heart thudded as it all came flooding back to her memoryâlast night and Chase!
She sucked in a breath of steadying air. Besides being an intensely attractive man, Chase had proved to be sensitive and givingâand an extremely skilled lover. Ronda felt a shudder of warm feeling rush through her, and she hugged herself, reliving it with relish.
The smile that lifted her lips was melancholy, and she lowered her eyes to the rumpled bed wondering almost sadly, âWhat have I gotten myself into?â Totally against all that was logical and rational in her life, she had allowed herself to become emotionally and physically involved with a pilot.
She bit her lower lip, exhaling heavily. Pilotsâthe darlings of the Air Forceâwere like doctors to a hospital. To handle todayâs sophisticated jets, a pilot had to be not only highly intelligent but also physically superior, with perfect vision, hearing and reflexes. Yet, unlike a doctor, pilots had no permanent, earth-bound home. Of course, Ronda had met happily married pilots on temporary duty who gave her a friendly âhello,â went to their lonely quarters to call their wives and then went to bed with a best-selling novel. But she knew well that there were many married pilots who loved time away from their wives, making as many quick conquests as possible. Why even her own father . . .
Putting the heels of her hands to her eyes, she tried to block out the memory of her motherâs unhappy first marriage.
Even the high percentage of married pilots who played around seemed small compared with the number of high-flying, hard-loving single pilotsâlike Chaseâwho considered a night alone as a battle lost or a plane grounded.
She pushed a wayward strand of hair back with her wayward thought. âNo!â she breathed aloud. Chase cared for her. Last night wasnât justâjust one more night, one more woman to him. He really cared for her. At least, she had to think soâhope soâfor she knew now that no matter what happened tomorrow there was no other place in the world she would rather be than here with Chase . . . because she was in love with him.
