I left Megan’s garden apartment on Perry Street and strolled around the corner to the bakery on Bleecker. Even after the coffee and almond croissant, I had a sudden craving for one of its incredible cupcakes. My friend’s pep talk had had its intended effect and spurred me into action, but I needed a moment to plan. I hoped the additional sugar rush would help me do just that.

Fifteen minutes later, I walked out of the bakery with a lemon bar and a chocolate cupcake slathered in chocolate buttercream frosting.

Don’t judge me.

I grabbed a cab at the corner and during the brief ride back to my apartment, I drew in a deep breath and dialed Clay’s number with no idea of what I would say.

It rang three times before he answered. His voice was scratchy and laced with the vestiges of sleep. “Hey, you,” he said.

“Oh, hey. I’m sorry. Did I wake you?” I pulled the phone away from my ear and checked the time. It was almost eleven. I hadn’t considered he might be the type to sleep late on the weekend. “I guess I assumed you’d be awake by now.”

His gruff laughter echoed across the connection. “No, you didn’t wake me. But I am still in bed.”

“Oh.” Taken aback, I really didn’t know what to say. Was he simply lounging, or had I interrupted something...else? Hoo boy. I hadn’t considered that, either. “Well, I’ll let you get back to whatever you were doing and talk to you later.”

Before I could disconnect the call, he blurted out, “Hailey, wait.”

“No, really. It’s not important.” Heat flooded my cheeks at the possibility I had completely misread our previous interactions. Maybe what I’d interpreted as flirting was just his usual demeanor. So what if we’d kissed the night we met? Clay was a professional athlete who probably had a long list of willing women in his contacts. How was I supposed to compete with that? My mind cast for an excuse, for anything I could use as a reason for my spur-of-the-moment call. “I was just going to chat about the schedule for this week, but it’s no big deal. We can discuss it later.”

I heard nothing in the background that confirmed my suspicions he wasn’t alone, and I didn’t want to, either. I could kick myself in the ass for being such a fool. So much for being fearless. I made a mental note to smack Megan for suggesting it the next time I saw her.

“Hailey,” Clay said, his voice warm and filled with patience. I also detected a trace of humor. “I’m alone, if that’s what you’re worried about.”

How the heck did he do that? Was I really that transparent?

Yes, apparently I was, since I was falling all over myself trying to get off the phone.

“Well, um,” I stammered. My next words came out in a rush. “I still apologize for disturbing you. It just occurred to me we need to go over the game plan for the week, and I wanted to reach out before I forgot.
