Is it considered murder if someone bores you to death?

If so, the blowhole who’s been droning on for the last fifteen minutes deserves to be arrested. Because I’m literally about to keel over.

These weekly council meetings have become the bane of my existence. It’s bad enough that I’ve been saddled with a title I don’t want, thrust into a position I have no desire to uphold. But now, I also have to spend hours of my day every week listening to old Trites yammer on about nonsense, for the sake of validating themselves.

Most just like to hear themselves talk. Some actually care about the issues, but there certainly aren’t enough of those to justify weekly meetings. Neptune City is so peaceful, in fact, it borders on what some might call a Utopia.

A paradise where everything is perfect all the time…

The shiny, happy, and infinitely boring city on the ocean’s floor is home to a colony of us, who have been here for generations. And my father’s bloodline has held nobility since the start. My father, Aramis, is King, my mother, Ilsa, his Queen. My sister, Storm, is the Princess, and so that makes me… You guessed it.

A miserable Prince.

You’d think between the four of us we could take turns pretending to care about whatever inane things the council members want to blather about. But no. Because I’m my father’s heir, they’ve forced me into the seat. Which was definitely a mistake on their part, because I can only count shell tiles on the ceiling for so long before I forgo the need to stay quiet and decide to wreak some havoc.

Gotta live up to the name, right?

“It only makes sense to utilize the talents of our young tritons, in between training and education. The building of the new structures will be hugely beneficial, as I’ve outlined in these blueprints for—"

“Great idea, codpiece,” I cut him off before his voice can subject me to further hemorrhaging. “Motion to deploy twenty troops in each direction and fire their weapons with their eyes closed.”

Courtreese—that’s his actual name—gapes at me, then at the others, all of whom look as confused as he does. “But that’s not what I—"

“All opposed, say no.” I slap my hand down hard on the table. “Too slow! Motion approved, says me. Now, let’s get a move on.” I rise from my seat, leaving the room with two more claps. “Chop, chop! You heard the Prince!”

I’m sure I’ll get an earful from my father about that one, but he can’t scold me if he can’t find me. So I rush off quickly, avoiding the main halls of the castle while I sneak out to make my escape.

See, the thing I realized when I was old enough to start thinking for myself is that joy is only truly satisfying when you have to earn it. If everything is always dumped into your lap all the time, then happiness starts to feel so painfully average.

It’s the curse of monotony.
