It wasn’t signed, but it didn’t need to be. I could almost hear Alessia’s voice as I read the words. And behind the piece of paper were three other paragraphs written in old Norse. I didn’t understand a single letter.
“What’s this?” I asked Kassian.
“The last prophecy,” he said, almost regretfully, and reached for the piece of paper. “At the heart of the roots of the Evergreen Tree of Life, Mimir holds the knowledge of the bad and good, the ugly and the beautiful, the sacrifice and the love, the Eye of the Allfather. Life shall restore balance when Yggdrasil sprouts its first leaf. When the Midgardian Son of Odin reopens the well of magic in the new world, the old shall open. You who search it must not look; you who hear it must not listen.”
I looked at Kassian. “You who search it must not look? Are you sure it says that?” It didn’t make sense.
He nodded. “I’m sure.”
“Odin sacrificed his eye to Mimir for knowledge. They said the eye could be seen in the waters below the tree roots before Ragnarok. What are the chances that it’s still there?” Sim asked.
“You think if it were that simple that the masters wouldn’t have tried to take it for themselves?” I would have, if I was a master and knew that story.
Kassian shook his head. “Yggdrasil was destroyed in Ragnarok. Waters are no longer clear there. We’ve searched for the eye many times.”
“You’ve actually been there?” Millie asked, as surprised as I was.
“Three times,” said Kassian. “Asgard is completely destroyed. There’s no life there. The air is toxic. It can kill you if you’re exposed to it for too long. Everything and everyone is dead, even Mimir.”
“So why would they want us to go there?” I’d say to die, but that didn’t make any sense, either. The masters wanted the Eye; otherwise they wouldn’t have bothered with that show they put on that morning.
“Because of the spear,” Kassian said. “The spear has to make a difference. We never had a weapon of the Valkyries with us when we searched.”
I looked down at the spear by my feet. “You think this will be able to bring back the Yggdrasil Tree or something?”
“No, I don’t think that’s it. I think it might be able to show you the way to the Eye, if it’s still there.”
I shook my head. “It sounds like a load of bullshit to me.”
“The prophecy is perfectly clear,” Sim said. “When the Midgardian Son of Odin—that’s you—reopens the well of magic in the new world, which is this world, the old world shall open. The old world is Asgard.”
“So what—I just go there with the spear and demand the Eye of the Allfather, and then it’s over?” I shook my head. “It’s way too simple.”
“Too simple,” Kassian agreed. “But that’s the only place we can look.”
“There has to be some place else. What do the stories say? Maybe someone already took the Eye and hid it somewhere?” It didn’t feel right in my gut.
