CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

"So, your friend seems nice." Armie glanced at Xian as they ambled down the sidewalk. The sun was starting to set, but he swore he could still see a glow about her shoulders.

It was her. She was The One. Xian… he didn't know her last name.

It didn't matter since she was destined to be a Charmayne. He didn't have a single doubt in his mind about that. It was too soon to call it love. Love grew. But he saw it sprouting up fast.

"Trix is great. She's just never been good with guys in real life. At least not long term."

Xian twisted her lips in a way that Armie found adorable. He wanted to untangle her bottom lip from her upper lip with his tongue.

"She's a great friend, though. The best."

"I can believe it. She wants to protect you."

"Will she have to protect me from you?"

His mouth twisted at the irony. "I'd like your protection to be my job."

The way the sunlight dappled on her skin, accentuating the gentle curves of her features, had him utterly entranced. There was an exquisite beauty to her. The contours of her face, her lips, her nose, everything pulled him in, drew him closer.

It wasn't just her physical beauty that captivated him. It was the way she thought about the world. It was how she wanted to organize it for everyone's ease. It was the way she laughed, her slender shoulders shaking with each giggle. It was the way she looked at the world with a sense of hesitancy and hope. Armie wanted to be her partner as they moved forward in life. More than that, he wanted to be her shield so that she would never hesitate again.

The flash of a future with her left Armie feeling an overwhelming sense of calm. The chaotic cacophony in his mind, the questions and doubts, faded away to a gentle hum. His heart, which had been restless for so long, now beat with an eager excitement. He felt grounded, more sure of the path he was on. The rest of his life felt like it was starting today, and he couldn't wait to explore every moment of it with her by his side.

"She's right though," Xian was saying. "This is like something out of a storybook. Things like this don't happen in real life."

"Would you rather I turn around and walk the other way?"

"No," she said quickly.

The quickness of her reply to his joke made Armie chuckle. The vehemence in that single syllabic response made him bite his lower lip. Xian wanted him. Not nearly as much as he wanted her. But it was a start.

Armie's fingers reached out, hovering just over hers. Xian's hands weren't soft like the Louisiana debutantes he'd grown up with. They were rough from all the hard work she'd done over her young life. One by one, he curled his fingers around hers. With every fold and intertwine, he saw their lives weaving together.

Xian's fingers wrapped around his just as tightly, with an almost magnetic pull.
