J.B. Hanan, Akron School Board president and Summit County KKK exalted Cyclops. Akron Beacon Journal.
National religious headliners added to the Klanâs local muscle. Evangelist Bob Jones, who later founded the racially exclusionist Bob Jones University in Greenville, South Carolina, spoke at outdoor revivals in Akron and across the country flanked by the KKKâs iconic flaming cross. At his Goodyear Park appearance, however, Jones mixed racist rhetoric with an image more in keeping with the cityâs status as the early twentieth-century home of high-tech inventors and rubber barons.
