Chapter 27
Abraham walked through the dark streets. He could sense the watch calling to him, stronger than ever. He knew exactly where to go. The connection between himself and the stone disk hidden within the watch stretched back across the centuries. They were as inexorably linked as the Earth and Moon, and just like the Moon exerted its influence from afar, so the watch drew him ever closer.
He kept to the shadows; face turned away whenever he encountered an infrequent soul walking the same streets. In his pocket was the knife, one hand curled around the handle should he need it, but so far, he had not. No one challenged him, and the further he walked, keeping mainly to side streets and back alleys, the fewer people he encountered. It was while he was navigating one such alley, a narrow pathway between a builderâs yard and a crumbling warehouse, that the signal from the watch faded once again.
Abraham stopped mid-stride. One minute he could feel the diskâs energy, the next there was nothing except a vague connection, barely more than background noise. No matter, he could still sense the residual connection between them. It remained like a slowly dimming trail, leading him to the watchâs last location. But he must hurry, or it might fade to nothing before he reached its terminus.
Abraham set off again, quicker this time. It took him another thirty minutes to arrive at his destination, a sprawling university campus that had grown exponentially since the last time heâd been in these parts. That was over a century ago, and although many of the buildings looked familiar, there were now other structures of glass and steel crowding in around them, robbing them of their majesty.
He hurried across an open grassed space with a fountain in the middle and soon found himself at an imposing Georgian building that rose three floors above the quadrangle. He mounted the steps and tried the main doors, only to find them locked. If he were at full strength, he could pry them open without issue, but as it was, he doubted his ability to succeed. The best way to get into the building, he decided, was to break a window. He descended the steps again and was about to go in search of a suitable entry point, when fate provided an easier way to access the building.
The main doors swung open, and three people exited. Two men and a woman. They were deep in conversation and didnât notice Abraham as he pressed himself back into the shadows under the buildingâs eaves. They descended the steps and started across the quadrangle. He slipped out of his hiding place and up to the door, stopping it from closing moments before it clicked shut and locked him out again. He slipped inside and found himself in an expansive lobby with a staircase that ran up through the middle of the building.
The trail was growing cold now. His connection to the watch, which less than an
