Natalie spent most of the morning patrolling the mountainside of town.

With Jefferson’s set in the center of Hamlet, Natalie’s home only a few roads away, Kade had spent most of his time around there. The mountains bordered half of the small town, a rocky ridge that towered up above; a dense, wooded forest covered most of the ground, with dirt paths that served as roads leading up to the caves.

It was peaceful out there. Houses were few and far between, with Natalie pointing out the former doc’s abandoned office out in the boonies. She explained that most of the town expected the man—Doctor De Angelis, she called him—to return. No one ever really left Hamlet, and just because he moved out a year and a half ago, the building was just waiting for him to return.

She brought him up a few winding paths, laughing when she drove up to a strange sight high up in the mountains. There were two posts, tied together with a length of rusted chain stretched between them.

Kade hear something in her laughter. There was a story there, some meaning he just wasn’t getting.

So he asked.

“What’s that?”

“You know what a lover’s lane is?”

He nodded.

“This is Hamlet’s. Kids come up her for some privacy all the time. The chain means the spot’s taken.” She paused for a moment, a wicked grin tugging on her pouty lips before she turned to look behind her, easily navigating the cruiser back down the path. “You know, if the posts were empty, I could’ve shown you it. It’s nice.”

Kade sat up straight. Part of him wanted to yank that chain aside, march through the posts, and kick out whoever was parked up there. The other part went eerily still as he stopped to wonder how many times his sweet Natalie had been up here before.

And with who.

No. No. Do the job, he reminded himself. Don’t get distracted.

Distracted investigators made mistakes. Stupid mistakes.

He clamped his mouth shut, slouching back in his seat, pretending as if he didn’t hear the promise or the invitation in her tone. She was fucking with him. After how she caught him taking advantage of her hospitality and kind nature, he guessed he deserved it.

The image of her with some faceless guy wouldn’t leave his head, though. He forced it to, and huffed when it was harder than he wanted it to be.

When Natalie finally turned the cruiser around, guiding it toward the main road again, it took everything he had not to glance at her amused expression, either, or swivel in his seat, looking behind him.

Stupid fucking chain.
