Outside the brick wall that enclosed Judge Martinson's estate, a man waited in a parked car, his fingers drumming on the steering wheel.

He watched as the police swarmed the driveway, their lights flashing through the sparse trees. This was the most delicate part of the operation. Everything needed to fall into place, or their problem would persist.

The phone in his hand buzzed, and he glanced down at the screen, hoping for a bit of good news. The message he saw brought a smile to his face.

He had a phone call to make. News like this needed to be shared.

The man dialed a number and waited as it rang. When his contact answered, he spoke immediately, his voice calm. "It's done."

"She took the bait?"

"Yes, she did."

There was a relieved sigh through the phone. Then the voice on the other end said, "That's good to hear."

"Yes. Time to proceed with the plan."

"You should get out of there. Cops are bound to set a perimeter soon."

The man nodded, even though his contact couldn't see him. "Agreed. We'll be in touch."

He hung up and tossed the phone onto the passenger seat. For a moment, he just sat there, watching as the police continued to swarm the estate. He knew that the next steps would be crucial. He needed to make sure that everything went according to plan if he wanted this to work.

A small smile tugged at the corner of his mouth as he started the car and pulled away from the curb. He had work to do.
