Tate came awake slowly, blinking against the bright light filtering through the windows where sheâd forgotten to close her curtains again. Tate rolled away from the light, pulling her covers half over her head in a bid to escape the piercing rays. It was too early to get up.
Wait. Her eyes opened. The strength and position of the sunlight said the sun had been up for some time.
Tate sat up. âWhat time is it?â
Ryu stirred, his face soft in sleep. âWhat?â
âThe time. I need to know.â
âWhy?â Ryu asked in a husky voice.
Never mind. It was pointless asking him.
Tate reached for the first clothes she could find, a pair of loose pants and an oversized shirt. She threw a comfy house coat over the ensemble, not caring if she looked like a beggar.
Ryu regarded her with a nonplussed expression. âWhat are you doing?â
Ah, thatâs right. Ryu didnât know. He was usually gone by this time. The rare occasions where he stayed into the morning usually happened when she was at headquarters.
This would be a new experience for him.
For half a second, Tate debated whether she should warn him. Naw. Itâd be more entertaining this way.
Tate grabbed a boot, stamping one foot into it before hopping on it, struggling to get the other boot on as she headed for the door.
Hurry. Hurry. Must move faster or sheâd lose.
Tate raced out of her room, leaving Ryu behind. Morning in this house meant it was every person for themselves.
Tate reached the stairs and leapt down a flight. She drew on the dragonâs speed to race through the hallways. She reached the main hall in seconds, the rug sliding under her as she windmilled her arms to keep her balance. Tate made a note to remind the boys to move the rug to a safer place or get rid of it entirely. It was a useless affectation in a household such as theirs.
She rounded a corner, leaving the death rug behind. Almost there. Even better, she couldnât sense any of the others. Looked like it was her win today.
Tate was already grinning as she burst through the threshold of the dining hall. Her grin dropped from her face as the twins cocked their heads at her from where they crouched on the buffet table. Theyâd changed their paws into furry hands which they were using to stuff their faces as quickly as they could.
At Tateâs entrance, they froze. Their cheeks bulged out and the food looked like it had been mauled by a pack of starving wolves.
âOh no, you donât. Those are mine.â
The twinsâ eyes widened in alarm, and they started shoveling the food into their mouths faster.
Tate crossed the room in a few powerful strides, grabbing one of the twins, Pax, and tossing him behind her. Willa evaded her reach, scooping up an armful of the tarts and scurrying off the buffet table.
âOh no, you donât,â Tate growled following her. âYou stole them all yesterday too. Itâs my turn today.â
