Julia watched me carefully. “Would you have shot him, Jake?”

That was a question I had asked myself multiple times.

I shrugged my shoulders. “Probably not. I just wanted to make my point and for him to go away. Maybe I gave him something to think about. He never cared if the women he chased were married or had a boyfriend. He only cared about one thing.”

“What about Brandy?'' she asked softly.

I leaned my arms on my knees. “Unfortunately, that one played out more publicly. I didn't plan on going over to Scott’s after running my errands in town. But it was my routine, and I was barely conscious of what I’d done until I was sitting in my usual booth. I really should have skipped lunch that day.”
