So I did. I didn’t even bother standing up to do it.

And she disappeared.

Gunther stared at me slack-jawed as his father floated around the room, peals of laughter ringing from the ghost.

“Ejected her?” Devana asked, suspicious, as Scout stood beside her looking interested.

“Look, I know that she raised you, and all, but I’m really losing patience with people treating me like a fool they can push around. And whacking me just set me off,” I revealed as I leaned against the kitchen counter. “Shield or not, it just isn’t cool.”

“You banished her from the circus? A norn?”

“Ms. Elkins, yes. Banished, barred, banned. Whoosh. Gone.”

“But how did you have the power to do so?”

“Dunno,” I shrugged as Roland Makepeace acted out with tremendous dramatic flair what had taken place for his wife, Gerda, and daughter Anna behind us. “Don’t care. I will not be assaulted every time I turn around by an ancient woman with a god complex.”

“But I—”

“Look, I’m sure she’s fine,” I cut off the shocked huntress witch. “We have other things we need to deal with. I need to ask you something. You told me once—well, more than once—that you served the balance. What did you mean by that?”

Samantha Goodfellow and Sarah Stevens had been deep in conversation with Tabitha. At my question, all three stopped talking and turned to listen.

“My kind seeks to keep the world in balance, Charlotte,” Devana explained quietly, her voice taking on a breathy cadence. “The world runs well when it is balanced. I am the unity in a world of opposites.”

“I don’t understand what that means,” I conceded. “I mean, I understand the words. But in practicality, what does it mean, exactly?”

“The world, human and paranormal both, values opposition. Right and wrong, life and death, success and failure. In nature,” she beamed, “there is no such thing. There are no right and wrong trees—there are large and small trees, ripe fruit and unripe fruit, blooming flowers and ones that have yet to bloom. But these are not opposites, as each has its purpose and its promise. A small tree does not feel secondary to a more substantial one, it only is what it is.”

Everyone in the room stared at the stately woman as she spoke. Scout’s eyes glowed as he listened to his former love, admiration written across his face.

“Do you understand? I am the unity in a world of opposites,” Devana repeated. “Well, not just me. Many work for the balance. Some aren’t even aware if it. It is in unanimity that we are fully realized, Charlotte. Until that day, there are those of us that work to hold the balance intended for this world.”

“Having and not having arise together, difficult and easy complement each other,” Kyle whispered. “Long and short contrast each other, high and low rest upon each other—”

“Front and back follow one another,” Aidan finished.

“Yes,” Devana smiled and nodded, sounding pleased that the couple seemed to understand her.
