A little man with a fox-like face stood just inside the shop. He was maybe four foot two, wiry thin, bandy-legged, wearing baggy pants and an oversized sweater. His skin had a faintly gray cast to it, his dark gray hair was thinning and uncombed. His eyes were dark, almost black. When he smiled, his teeth were surprisingly white against his almost black gums, and a little pointier than Cary might have expected.

Marianne sighed, put her free hand on her hip, and said, “How many times do I have to tell your impy-ass to leave me alone? I’m not helping you.”

“You will, you will,” the man said, his voice high and squeaky. “You and your sisters are needed. You will. He sent me for you.”

“And you can tell him no. Again. I’m not spinning gold for that bastard.”

“Spinning gold?” Cary asked, looking between the little man and Marianne. “You can do that?”

Marianne waved a hand in the air. “Think of it as a metaphor.”

Okay. Cary narrowed her eyes at the little man.

“He said you should come or else,” the man said, with a slight laugh that sounded reflexive more than amused.

“Or else what?” Marianne said. “I am not his servant to call whenever he likes.”

“Who’s he?” Cary asked.

“This asshole king who thinks I’m here to do his bidding,” Marianne said.

“A king?” Cary said.

“My king will have his way,” the little man said.

This was all very weird, Cary thought. Although, after six months of her new job, her definition of weird had altered radically. She just hadn’t been anticipating weird at Marianne’s shop.

Marianne pointed a finger at the door. “Leave. I have a customer. I don’t have time for this nonsense.”

The little man giggled again, then pulled something out from the hem of his sweater. Cary had just enough time to recognize it as a crystal ball, a very small one, maybe the size of a baseball, and as clear as a water bubble. The man’s smile widened into something truly horrifying.

And then he threw the ball at Marianne.

Instinctively, Cary stepped in front of her friend. She wasn’t even sure what she was blocking, but sure enough her powers worked because the ball stopped a few inches in front of her face and just hung in the air, vibrating.

So. Obviously a threat then.

Cary blinked when it swung to one side, then another, as if it were trying to find a way around her.

And not an ordinary glass ball.

“How are you doing that?” Marianne asked.

“Long story,” Cary said. “Part of the new job. What the hell is that thing?”

The ball swung back a few feet then came flying at them again. Cary put a hand on Marianne’s arm to keep her from moving. She flinched when the ball got as close as a few inches from her nose before stopping abruptly.

The little man started dancing around and stomping his feet. “No no no. It’s supposed to work. Why isn’t it working? You have to come with me. He insists. He wants his gold.
