Chapter Fourteen

My mind swam up from the bottom of a deep, black lake and suddenly I surfaced. My eyes felt like they had a pound of sand in them. I blinked. Make that a pound of sand each. The taste in my mouth was nothing short of rotten. Odd. I didn’t remember eating hot, wet garbage. The need to pee became an emergency. I had to go. Now. I tried to swing my legs over but they were rubbery and didn’t want to cooperate. What the hell? I finally blinked the sand from my eyes and focused on my body.

“Oh, my gods!” I was in a hospital, hooked up to several machines and IVs. I squirmed. I really needed to pee before I wet the bed. I lifted the covers and let out a yelp. A catheter! A full catheter from the looks of the bag. I assessed the rest of me, discovering a myriad of monitors, IVs, and a feeding tube in my nose. I paged the nurse and tried to calm the adrenaline that was causing my heart monitor to beep faster. Sitting motionless, I held my arms out, counting the wires attached to me and doing a deep breathing exercise.

“Well, well, well. Good to see you finally awake, honey.” An older, greying nurse with smooth brown skin came in.

“I have to pee,” I blurted.

She chuckled. “No, honey, you just have a catheter. I’ll empty it for you and as soon as the doctor does his rounds, we’ll see if you can walk. If you can make it to the bathroom, I don’t see any reason why we can’t take this thing out.”

“What happened?” I croaked.

“You don’t remember a thing, do you?” She poured a cup of ice water and handed it to me.

“No, I don’t remember what happened,” I answered, trying to open the safe in my mind that held my memories hostage. I took huge, grateful sips. The cool water was a balm on my scratchy throat. I must have slept with my mouth open.

“Slow down, there’s plenty more.” She refilled it.

I chugged the second cup. “Sorry.” I handed it back. I tried to take small sips of the third.

“I’ll bring you a potion for your throat, I know it hurts. I sleep with my mouth open, too.” She winked, snapping her fingers, and the things needed to empty my bag did their work. “I’ve been doing this so long I don’t even have to think about it anymore. I just snap and muscle memory takes care of the rest.” While the bag was emptying in the toilet, she bustled around, pressing buttons and changing bags.

“Mmmhmm.” I concentrated on the ceiling tiles, trying not to see the container of pee emptying itself in the toilet. “That’s the best thing about spells you do every day, isn’t it?”

“And around here it comes in handy, I’ll tell you. Well, I think someone will be along to sit with you shortly. You haven’t been alone since you got here. That cute boy of yours just sits in that chair or sleeps.
