“If you can’t stand the heat. Get out of the kitchen.”

Proverb 92:41 from the Book of Face, Mortem Era.

THE TWINS WERE THE first to their feet. As the rest of us gathered, Oneo and Twoa stood at opposite ends of the group. In sync, they threw out their palms, creating a fine blue barrier over the squad. I’ve only ever witnessed their tracking skills, but this was my first time witnessing their intertwining abilities. While the earth monster hurled boulders at us, the debris bounced off the protective shield. The boulders were coming at high speeds, when they connected to the shield, it created spiderweb cracks like breaking glass.

“I’m sick of fucking earth creatures.” I held the side of my stomach as I pulled myself up to my feet.

Fai shouted, “Let’s go!”

Fia, Sarue, and I sprinted in the opposite direction of the earth monster. The beast dove into the ground to chase us. Before we could get far, earth walls burst forth out of the soil, blocking us on three sides.

The twins said in unison, “We can’t hold it back for much longer.”

The shield was worn thin at this point. The beast burst through the earth, this time flinging carriage-sized boulders.

Where was it getting all these rocks from?

I wheezed, placing my left hand on my aching belly. It was wet. When I pulled my hand away, blood stained my palms.

The twins yelled, “We’re almost at our max! Someone do something!”

It would only take a few more boulders and the cracks that zig-zagged through the shield would break.

Oneo shouted, “Rwju, open the ground, create a pool or something.”

Rwju, concentrating, tried to form the earth into an ocean. “The earth won’t yield. Whoever is controlling this thing is far more powerful than me.”

An Earthborn more powerful than a Waterborn?

Twoa, his boots digging into the soil to get a better grip, shouted, “That’s not what we need to hear right now, man.”

Another boulder collided with the shield, almost knocking Twoa off his feet.

Rwju clasped his hands together and then separated them, aiming them at the sky. Thunder cracked in the distance. The air grew thick with humidity. Lightning flashed. The beast slammed its fist to the ground, rocking the soil underneath us.

There was no room for escape. It was fight or else. Personally, I didn’t want to know what “or else” would be.

Here I was again, broken, weak, and a burden to the group. I couldn’t even handle an earth-gifted pig. How in the hell was I to fight an earth creature that’s stronger than the B.E.? How was I to survive this?

CRACK!

The twins’ shield shattered louder than the thunder. Rwju clapped, his arms shaking as he held them high over his head. Clouds formed above the creature. Rwju clapped again and water poured onto the monster like a flood. The twins retreated to us as Rwju took the lead.

“We’re tapped out,” Oneo said, struggling to catch his breath.

Sarue cut in. “I have some energy. What about you, Fia?”

Fia looked confused, as if he himself wasn’t sure of the answer.
