Another Case
It was only when I got home and had my shoes off and my feet up that I remembered I was supposed to knock at Melissa’s house to arrange Sam’s puppy visit. I had intended to call her but discovered I lost her number when I dropped my phone in the upper deck pool on the Aurelia. It was too late in the evening now for me to find a number and make a call so I would have to try again tomorrow. There would probably be time in the morning between other tasks. I also remembered what Mavis said about Charlie getting a lawyer.
I had to wonder about that. Since the incident with Emily at his house, we had spoken only once. I was divorcing him, so it was all on me to make the arrangements and it should have been a simple enough business, or would have been if I hadn’t found out about the money Charlie had been keeping from me for our entire marriage. No sooner had I found out about that than I was gifted a house and cars and everything else I could ever ask for, the Maharaja of Zangrabar choosing to be incredibly generous just because I rescued him, saved his life and prevented his throne from falling into the hands of a scheming uncle. I knew what he had given me was a drop in the ocean for one of the richest men on the planet, but it was still a lot for me.
However, it changed my attitude toward Charlie and what he had. I no longer felt inclined to take half of our shared assets, not that I discussed it with anyone, and felt certain everyone would tell me I was crazy to let him off the hook when he had behaved so badly. It just didn’t seem worth the effort to me.
Then I failed to do anything about the divorce; my new business and mounting cases demanding my attention be focused elsewhere. Now though, if I discovered he was gunning for me and thinking he could grab a share of what the Maharaja had so generously given, then I was going to get a lawyer of my own. Two lawyers. Heck, I might even get a team.
I was alone in my three-room master suite. Barbie had taken Hideki to their room. The sight of her being fondled by another man, albeit, a scruffy teenager, had got him all hot and bothered which I think she was planning to use to her advantage. Jermaine had tried to continue working, offering to draw me a bath and bring me a drink. I sent him away; he deserved to relax as much as anyone else. He needed to meet someone and have some kind of a life outside of looking after me. Being my butler somehow filled him with purpose and joy, but he had to want more from life. I wondered if anything would become of whoever he was talking to in the student bar earlier.
