WORKING WITH STUDENTS FROM POVERTY

Most of the students who come to us from poverty are not discipline problems. However, there are characteristics that are often attributed to these students that may offer challenges to the student and the teacher. For example, Payne (2001) says that students from generational poverty (poverty for two or more generations) may laugh when disciplined because in their world this is a way to save face. Some other behaviors they may exhibit include:

■ Arguing with the teacher—Those in poverty often distrust anyone in authority.

■ Inappropriate or vulgar comments—Inner-city students and students from poverty use a form of language called casual register that includes words from the street.

■ Inability to follow directions—Procedural memory is often not used in poverty. Students who have grown up in poverty tend to live for now; planning is not part of their day-to-day activities.

■ Fighting—Fighting is often how children in poverty survive. They do not know negotiating skills because they have not been taught.

■ Hands on others—Nonverbal data are a part of poverty. The body is important because it is one of the few things they own.
