Chapter 5
I woke up eventually. That surprised me; when I closed my eyes, I thought that was it, I would die from that wound, but it seemed I got lucky.
It was one of the only two things I had reason to feel lucky about when I woke up. By the time I recovered my senses, almost a month had passed, a month where I had been in a coma and many things had happened. For one I was hailed as a hero, and I only truly understood the reason why when I read the news about it, and I realized Freya Parker had said I had been the one to find the missing children. That was a complete fabrication, and not one any of my colleagues believed, but they werenât willing to rock the boat.
I still suffered for it. My bosses werenât happy, and they told me that outright. If that had been it, I might have ended up with a stalled career, knowing I would never get promoted again. They werenât happy with me, knew something more was going on, but they couldnât exactly move against someone the media was calling a hero.
Unfortunately, that was when I had another bout of bad news. The bullet had messed me up more than I imagined, as it entered my gut and came out of my back it brushed against my spine. It wasnât much, but it damaged the nerves. Not enough to be permanent, the doctors told me, but it might take me years of physical therapy to recover completely. I could walk, though I was still weak from the coma, but with a limp, and I should always use at least one crutch.
With all of that, my bosses had no problem pushing me into an early retirement, one which I had no other choice but accepting, if I didnât want to risk making things worse on myself.
Sincerely, I might have gone insane from all that, done something I shouldnât, if it wasnât for the other thing that made me lucky. Freya and Marika Parker.
âRonnie.â Marika said as she entered my room, bouncing towards me, and I couldnât help but smile at the girl, then chuckle a little as she threw herself atop of my bed, though the motion did make me wince a little in pain.
âMarika.â I reached out and caressed the golden curls, marveling at them, at just how cute the seven-year-old could be. She was about to turn eight, and it was almost strange how much I was looking forward to it.
âI already told you to be careful.â Freya warned her daughter as the blonde finished climbing into the bed and pressed against my side, my arm moving around her frame almost immediately, making sure I could hold her close to me.
âRonnie doesnât mind, do you?â Marika turned her big green eyes on me, so similar to her motherâs they gave me pause for a few moments.
âNo, I donât. Though my stitches might.â I chuckled as I said the words, and the little girl chuckled with me.
