The Library Café was buzzing when I returned, with a mixture of staff who had decided to start sliding into the weekend over a coffee, and visitors who had spent the warm day walking miles around the grounds and house and were now refuelling on cake before the drive home. I loved the cafés when they were like this. I had tried to make all of them warm and friendly places, and at times like now, I really felt I had achieved my aim.

Chelsea was efficiently serving a line of customers, while Tina was making coffee and preparing toasted sandwiches accompanied by a young woman I didn’t recognise.

‘Sophie, this is Rachel. She’s working this weekend, so I’m showing her the ropes.’

‘Great, Rachel, thanks for helping out.’

She smiled. ‘Happy to.’

I started to make my way to my office. ‘Oh,’ I stopped and turned back to Rachel, ‘and ignore anything she says about me and coffee.’ Rachel smiled again and looked at Tina. ‘She’s already given you the how not to lose your job training, hasn’t she?’

Tina looked towards the ceiling. ‘I’ve never noticed that crack before.’

‘You’re fired,’ I said. Tina laughed.

‘See what I mean?’ she said to Rachel. ‘Her latte wasn’t up to scratch this morning.’

I shook my head. ‘Rachel, you’re promoted, you’re the new supervisor.’ I walked to my office, the sound of Tina laughing in the background. I grinned to myself. How my team put up with me, I didn’t know.
