4 Turn Top Right Side Out

Trim all edges with pinking shears, and turn the top right side out through the waistband opening, using the point turner to fully turn out the waistbands’ corners.

5 Hand-Sew Opening Closed

After fully turning out the top’s edges, press them flat, and use a slipstitch (see this page) to close the opening.

Sewing Instructions for Skirt

1 Join Skirt Front and Back

Place the Skirt Front and Back wrong sides together with the edges aligned, and join the pair at side seam with a French seam (see this page and this page for directions on sewing this seam).

2 Measure and Join Waistband Elastic

Find your natural waist measurement by wrapping your elastic (without stretching it) around you, about 2" below your belly button or just above the top of your hip bone; then add ¼" to the measurement, and cut the elastic this length. Then use a zigzag stitch (set to a medium width and length) to join the ends of the elastic and make a loop.

3 Attach Elastic to Waistband

With the skirt turned right side out, pin the elastic inside the top edge of the skirt’s waist, as shown on this page, positioning the elastic’s joined edges at what will be the skirt’s center-back point and stretching the elastic evenly as you pin it in place. Using a medium-length and -width zigzag stitch, sew the elastic to skirt’s waist, stitching close to the elastic’s top edge and stretching your elastic as you sew just enough so that the fabric lies flat while you stitch.

Next turn the skirt to the wrong side, and fold the elastic to the wrong side and zigzag-stitch the elastic’s second edge, stitching over the last seam you just sewed.

4 Hem Skirt

Because silk jersey will not ravel, the hem on a silk jersey garment is often left as a simple cut edge, or alternately the skirt can be finished with a narrow hand-rolled hem (see this page). I like a simple cut edge for this skirt, and the key is to cut as clean an edge as possible. (Since a rolled hem requires a negligible amount of fabric, you could even decide after cutting the hemline whether to leave it unhemmed or finish it with a rolled hem.)

First determine the length that most flatters you (usually a hemline looks best intersecting a narrow part of the leg, like just below the knee). After measuring your desired hem length from the waistline, measure and mark that length on the skirt’s side seams with the water-soluble marking pen or with pins. Fold the skirt in half, matching the side seams; lay it on a flat cutting surface, and smooth any wrinkles with your hands. Then, using the hem-length measurement and measuring from the waistline, mark several points along the hem. Use these marked points to cut a clean hemline.
