Chapter 12

Maddox

What’s the issue?

I’m wracking my brain, trying to figure out what’s got my babygirl staring out the window, lost in another world.

As much as I try to put the pieces together, I’m drawing a blank. She’s quiet on the drive up North. I want to pry, to demand to know how she’s feeling. Make her tell me where she went last night when she looked so far away.

That’s what I want to do.

But that’s not what she needs.

I’ve gotten pretty damn good at reading her and what my babygirl needs, and right now it’s a nice quiet drive with her pup in her lap. So, that’s what I give her.

Even if it’s killing me.

I take a swig of one of the many water bottles she’s brought. She borrowed a cooler from the beach house and packed it with an army of water bottle soldiers, all lined up nice and neat in the soft-sided bag. Whenever one bottle empties, she replaces it.

Lucky for Buddy, I’ve got to make as many pit stops as him. He loves the fresh air, running in little circles at every rest stop.

We’re about an hour outside the city when I decide she’s had enough time. There’s a heaviness between us that I don’t want to exist for another second.

I slide my hand over her knee, giving it a gentle squeeze. “Baby. We need to talk.”

“Okay.” She runs her fingers through Buddy’s fur. We gave him another bath just before we left and she even blow-dried his fur. He’s looking pretty handsome. Even if he still hates me. “What do you want to talk about?”

“Something’s been on your mind since last night. I’ve given you space, but it’s time to talk out whatever is bothering you.” She gives such a deep sigh I almost regret asking her. We’ve been in such a good place. I remind myself, sometimes the hard conversations are the only way to get back to that good place. “Whatever is bothering you, you’ll feel better after we talk.”

She twirls a strand of her hair around her finger. A habit I’ve not seen before. It’s cute. Her bottom lip gives a little pout. That’s really freaking cute. “It’s just that—I guess, I’m unsure where we stand. You know? When we get to New York? I know I’m staying with you till I get settled, and I’m your date to the wedding, but what happens after that? I mean, you have your life and I’ll be trying to start some kind of new life, pick up where I left off… I just don’t know—what happens to us?”

“I hadn’t thought about it. The question never crossed my mind.” I give a shrug.

She goes—cold. Her thigh tenses under my hand, her finger freezing mid-twirl. What’s bothering her? Has she read me wrong? I play back my words in my head. The question never crossed my mind. Yeah—classic dude communication issue.

“The question never crossed my mind,” I grab her hand in mine, “because I want you.”

She gives me a small smile.
