âYou look a little shocked,â Mary said to me. âWhy?â
âA bracelet like the one you described was found in a house near where Bradâs body washed ashoreâthe house he and Lisa apparently owned together. Did you know that?â
âNo. Iâd be happy to take a look at it, although why it would turn up now after twenty years, I canât imagine.â
I found the picture on my phone.
âThis isnât my work,â Mary said. âItâs much grander than what I doâand I donât work in gold.â
âThank you,â I said. âWe understand Shannon has been in Apalachicola recently, and that you may have witnessed a confrontation between her and Lisa.â
âDawn told you that, but it was actually my granddaughter, Chloe, who saw it. She reported it to me. I donât get out much and Iâm no longer interested in gossip. I spend the day in my studio if Iâm feeling well and upstairs in my apartment if Iâm not. Chloe can probably tell you about it word for word.â
Mary stood and walked to the curtain that separated the front of the store from the backroom where she worked. âChloe, can you come back here for a moment?â
Chloe finished with a customer and joined us in the backroom. âWhat is it, Grandma?â
âYou know all the gossip about the murder of Brad Arborough, and you saw what happened between Lisa and Shannon. These folks want to hear about it.â
âThere wasnât much to it, Grandma.â
âWas there a scene?â Mary asked. âThere always seems to be a scene when Shannon is around.â
âThey actually seemed to be commiserating over Bradâs deathâthey hugged each other.â
âThatâs odd,â Mary said, âI didnât think the two of them could be in the same room together, and the idea of their hugging one anotherâthatâs almost unimaginable unless one of them had a knife with plans to stab the other.â She chuckled. âMurder seems to make strange bed fellows. Thanks, Chloeâyou can get back to the customers.â
âWe wonât keep you a lot longer,â I said, âbut do you know much about Lisa Arborough?â
âAlmost nothing except that it was always clear that Lisa and Shannon hated each other. I know Lisa comes to Cape Azul most summers and spends time in town. She seems to like my jewelry and may have bought a piece of two.â
I nodded, thanked her, and Mason and I went back to purchase our water colors from Chloe.
I decided to show Chloe the picture of the bracelet. âHave you seen anything like this? Your grandmother told us about an old diamond and emerald bracelet sheâd made, but she said this wasnât it.â
Chloe looked at the photo. âThis doesnât look like her work. And if she says it wasnât her work, then it wasnât.â She handed me back my cell. It seemed to me she had more to say.
âWhat is it?â
âItâs probably nothing. I heard from a friend that a bracelet was found in Bradâs house on Cape Azul. Is this the bracelet?â
âYes. What do you know about itâor what does your friend know?â Mason asked.
