Chapter Eleven

Detective Nunez had been working around the clock to gain information about Shelly’s case. Under the radar, of course. The fact that Captain Detwiller froze the investigation pressed on her mind like a migraine. Detective Mercy was no help either. She found it strange that her partner was so easily swayed away from the very thing he was passionate about and wondered if he had any role in the case being silenced. To her, everyone was a suspect. No one could be ruled out.

“Another late night, Detective Nunez?” a man with a Spanish accent asked.

“Another late night, Detective Morales. Looks like it is for you too,” Nunez stated.

Detective Antonio Morales was a newbie who had the hots for Nunez. He was always asking her out on dates or bringing her coffee and bagels whenever he knew she’d be in at the station. But he was never really successful at winning her over. Until that night.

“I got something I want to run by you,” he said, as he pulled a file folder from his desk and waltzed over to hers. “Something I think you might find very interesting.”

“Oh yeah?” she asked as she leaned back in her chair. “Another dinner invitation? Because I can guarantee you, I’m not interested in anything of the sort,” she teased.

Detective Morales dropped his folder on her desk and took the chair next to her. Although he was a newbie at Nunez’s station, he was no newcomer to what went on behind the scenes there. In fact, he let her in on a huge secret that night. He wasn’t just any regular old detective. Detective Morales was an undercover FBI agent who was stationed at her precinct to investigate Captain Detwiller.

“I’ve heard some chatter around here,” he said. “Detwiller put the Cartwright case on ice? Any idea why?”

“Not a clue.” Nunez frowned, instantly interested in what he had to say. “Mercy seems to think it’s just another cold case, but I don’t think so. The halt came too suddenly. The woman we had under our microscope in the beginning, Autumn Davis? She thinks someone paid off Detwiller to shut down the investigation.”

“Do you feel the same way?” Antonio inquired.

“I really don’t know what to believe. I mean, I’ve worked under Detwiller for a long time now. Some of his actions have been questionable, but I understand cutting corners sometimes to get justice.” She didn’t want to believe he was crooked, of course, but the whole thing did seem a bit shady to her.

“Sometimes.” Detective Morales stated. “The FBI has been investigating Detwiller for a while now. A lot of his actions haven’t lined up with what he documents for court. That’s why I’m here. If you want to work this case under the table, I’m willing to help. I think working together could do a lot of good for us both. You want to find out what happened to Cartwright, and I want to finally catch that dirty cop.”

It was hard for Detective Nunez to believe Detective Morales was actually an FBI agent.
