Chapter Thirteen
I was making nachos in the microwave when Kurt rang my doorbell.
âHi,â I said, opening the door. âDo you like nachos?â
âIs there anyone who doesnât like nachos?â He grinned. âIâm afraid I donât have anything new to report. Even though I called him several times, Reggie Flax didnât answer his phone.â
âThatâs okay. He came into Lights, Camera, Action! this afternoon.â I was telling Kurt about my conversation with Reggie when the microwave dinged.
Before removing the nachos from the microwave, I got each of us a plate. âWhat would you like to drink?â
âWhatever you have. Iâm not picky.â
I placed the nachos and plates on the table and poured each of us a glass of root beer. âWe can have something more substantial later ifââ
âNo, this is fine. Thank you.â
We sat at the table, and I finished telling him about Reggieâs visit.
âThatâs so weird that he believes my grandmother is dead because she was looking into Randolph Gianettiâs death. I havenât seen anything, other than the Usual Suspects notebook, that would suggest she was investigating a crime.â
âWas there anything in there about who Imelda or any of the other members of the Usual Suspects believed killed Gianetti?â I asked.
He shook his head. âThe only thing in that notebook was the list of names. Iâm guessing that at some time or another, Gran decided to delve into the murder and then abandoned the notion as being pointless.â
âThat, or thereâs additional information hidden in your grandmotherâs home.â
My phone buzzed.
It was Barry calling.
I wiped my hands on my napkin before answering the call. âHi, Barry. Iâm here with Kurt, Imeldaâs grandson, and Iâm going to make this a video call so we can all discuss what youâve found.â
âGreat. Nice to meet you, Kurt.â
âLikewise,â Kurt said.
I moved my chair next to Kurtâs so Barry could see and hear us both clearly when I set my phone up in front of us. âDo I need to take notes?â
âI donât think so,â Barry said. âBut I do have some interesting information. I found someone who worked on the caseâhe was a rookie at the time. He took a look in the file and said that there were two witnesses who gave statements about Randolph Gianettiâs death. They were Reginald Flax and Agnes Harper.â
My jaw dropped. âAre you kidding?â
âNo, why?â
I told Barry about our encounters with both Reggie and Agnes. âWhat did the witness statements say?â
âThe detective said Mr. Flax reported that Mr. Gianetti had been despondent and had been talking about committing suicide. Agnes Harper said pretty much the same thingâGianetti had been depressed and hadnât wanted to go on.â
âOh, my gosh.â I raised my hand to my throat. âIs it possible one or both of them killed Gianetti? What if Agnes was really Gianettiâs ex-girlfriend? If she killed him, Reggie mightâve backed up the suicide story because he was glad Gianetti was no longer standing between him and Imelda.â
âBut sheâs the one who brought up the ex-girlfriend in the first place,â Kurt said. âWhy would she
