Chapter 8

‘‘OK, ladies so we know who has a motive for Dr. Bill’s death but there are more alibis to check,” said Patrick in a serious voice during dinner that night at Monica’s house.

‘‘I still need to check on what Arty Swinton did after bringing his wife home from their dinner. Doris, well, eventually I need to ask her what she was doing at Dr. Bill’s house that night after her house cleaning job. Finally, Dennis says he was walking and saw Mrs. Honor, but we know that that is a fib, and why would he lie?” said Monica tapping her pencil against her teeth.

"I suspect Dennis just got the day mixed up," said Erin, ‘‘It’s easy to do.”

‘‘Ah, I forgot about the charming Caspian,” said Monica. “He told Erin he was drinking at the Simcoe with a friend named Vince on the night of the murder, but said to forget about speaking to Vince; he is in a coma after losing a fight with some bikers.”

‘‘What about the night of the store break in?” asked Patrick passing the salad bowl to Erin while Haggis, sitting on the floor recognized that lettuce and tomatoes were not on his culinary wish list that night.

‘‘Sounds good to me. I have no desire to go to that dump full of bikers and bums,” said Erin getting up from the table, ‘‘Now, getting back to oil, when I got to Doris’s house to pick up the agreement she was up to her elbows in hot water trying to scrub grease or something like it out of Caspian’s pants.”

‘‘From the deep fryer I guess,” suggested Patrick.

‘‘Not necessarily,” quipped Erin. ‘‘Monica, do you remember that cute Sergeant Wickens mentioning the pool of oil in the parking lot of the store the morning after the break in.”

‘‘Vaguely,” said Monica tossing a tiny piece of potato to Haggis, ‘‘but I was so stressed that I was only half listening.”

‘‘They were going to get it tested, but we have never heard back from them.”

Patrick took his cell phone out of his pocket and dialed a number. He hung up a few minutes later with a smile. ‘‘Ok, ladies, the oil in your parking lot was from a two-stroke engine.” Van Dyck apologizes for not getting back to you with that information.”

‘‘Oh, that is a relief,” said Erin with mock joy, ‘‘I had been so worried it might have been from a four stroke!”

Patrick glanced at her and
