Shadows and trees will add the finishing touches and create the illusion of a town. My watercolour of Rye (below) demonstrates what you can achieve by keeping your painting simple and transparent. Look at the architecture; most of it was painted in simple shapes in earth colours, with the random shapes left as white paper. It looks quite solid although it is basically an abstract collection of colours.

Buildings viewed across water are painted with pale and transparent colours. Add the reflections with the same washes and avoid painting exact mirror images.
