W HEN I ARRIVED IN THE library, I stopped dead as I saw Ellen sitting in the doorway.

“Oh, Poppy, there you are. Your lessons are cancelled for this afternoon.”

“Wait, why?”

“Because I have this.” She took a vial of silvery blue liquid from her pocket and shook it slightly. “If I’m correct, this should paralyse one of those creatures your sister sends. At least for long enough for us to trap it.”

“‘If’ it works?”

“Well, we can’t be sure until we test it, and we can’t test it until we’re facing one of the creatures. But poisons are one of my specialities, and I’m fairly certain about this one. So, are you ready to call one of the creatures?”

My stomach twisted at the thought of letting one of those things close to me after so long trying to avoid them, but I supposed I would have to do it sooner or later, so I nodded.

“Good. You should get your Slayer friend. Someone needs to administer the poison, and he is the person most likely to succeed.”

I shook my head, Noah’s nerves echoing my own. “No, I’ll do this alone. I’m not putting any of my friends in danger.”

To my surprise, Ellen didn’t argue, she just shrugged before passing me the vial. “All right, then come with me, and I’ll set up the trap for the creature.”

Hey, can we try something? Noah asked as I followed Ellen outside.

Yeah, what?

I stumbled as knowledge poured into my mind, years worth of memories of training flooding into my mind, shorting out all other thoughts for several moments.

“You okay?”

I blinked, my vision blurry, but soon enough, I recovered and saw that Ellen had stopped, looking me over with a worried frown.

“Yeah,” I said. “Just Noah helping me out.”

I held my hand out, wondering if the memories actually made sense, or if they were just overwhelming, but then Noah’s sword appeared in my hand, as if it belonged there.

I moved his sword with all the expertise of his training, and Noah gave a satisfied hum.

The Elves did a good job of starting your training, so your muscles have some idea of what to do. Though you still lack my strength, particularly in the upper body.

I mean, is that just a lack of exercise or a lack of testosterone? There’s quite a bit I’ll do to help you feel at home in my head, but I draw the line at T. Though, I might invest in a sports bra, if just to stop you from chopping off my tits by accident.

He snorted. I don’t think that’s likely, I’m just warning you that my training might suggest making moves that you can’t physically manage.

Fair.

“Well, maybe you can handle this after all,” Ellen said before making her way to a rune on the ground. “I’ve drawn six of these around this patch of grass.” She gestured to the other five, and I quickly found the marks in the grass. “If you stand in the centre, I will activate the first phase of the runes.
