The Lhiannes were stalling. Garrett didnât know why, but considering Serafina hadnât given an outright rejection, he knew she wanted somethingâhe just wasnât sure what. Not knowing grated. Heâd sent Xander to keep a pulse on their movements. He hadnât reported anything unusual.
âGarrett,â Serafina acknowledged once the others had left the room. âMay I talk to you?â
He gestured for her to have a seat. He was curious what this was about. Perhaps she would finally tell him.
She sank into the chair, watching the flames crackle. From the fire, her hair reflected an orange glow, almost ethereal. She was silent for a while, as if something in the flames were divining some sort of mystical truth. But she wouldnât come to him if it wasnât important, and so he waited.
âDid you know the other Kilrhinns blame her?â she finally asked.
His brows drew together. âWho?â
âFreya.â
The name stopped him, his attention drawn like a hawkâs. âFor what?â
âThey think she caused the storm.â
He will find them, and they will pay for even having that thought.
Displeasure made her lips purse. âSomehow, they think weâre capable of creating one in a matter of seconds.â Her lips lifted up only slightly, but it hadnât reached her eyes. âWhile Iâm flattered they think we have that power, quite frankly, itâs insulting.â
âSerafinaââ
âYou invite us here, you welcome us, we risk our lives and you treat us like weâre different. No, donât even try to deny it.â
Fuck. He felt their chance for a partnership slipping from his fingers. âI wonât deny what my people think. That much is clear to me.â He knew they would have this reaction from the start. But to create change, someone had to instigate it. âI canât control what they think,â he admitted. âBut I can promise weâll do our best to shield you from any possible harm.â
Serafina was worried about the tension and distrust. It was a valid concern, and in time, he hoped working together would soften peopleâs opinions about them.
But he had no clue. If he could strangle people for their sheer idiocy, he wouldâve already done so. The Lhiannes had protected them from a devastating monster of its own kind, and his people had the audacity to blame the Lhiannes. Freya, who had only sought to help, putting her own self at risk. He had the urge to see her now.
Serafina looked at the flames again, and this time, a genuine smile touched her lips. âIâm going to hold you to it.â
