Marcello Genovese waits just outside the gates to my property, leaning against his Porsche with his arms crossed. The dark scowl on his face doesn't bode well for the impending conversation. If he brought anyone with him, though, I don't see them as I approach with Callandria at my side and Alessio and Antonio flanking us.

Callandria squeezes my hand, clearly anxious to face her brother. The similarities between them are obvious. They share the same amber eyes and Grecian features, though Marcello is over six feet tall.

Before Tommaso Genovese blew up our worlds, he and I got along well enough. We weren't necessarily good friends, but we weren't enemies either. We coexisted without malice, exchanging pleasantries whenever we crossed paths. At least, I thought we coexisted without malice between us. Perhaps I was wrong. Because he certainly said nothing when his fucking grandfather blackmailed Diego Butera into fanning the flames of war and then paid Carmine to try to kidnap Amalia.

"Easy," I murmur against Callandria's ear. "All will be well. Wait a moment, and let me speak to him."

"Luca."

"Wait, bella."

She huffs, and then nods reluctantly. Alessio and Antonio surround her, ensuring she's safe. If I die, I die. It is what it is. But they'll get her out of here to safety.

I don't think it'll come to that. At least not tonight. If her brother came looking for a fight, he would not have come alone. He would have come with an army. Apparently, Rafe's attempt to stall the sit-down didn't appease him. That should piss me off. Rafe is Capo dei capi. His word is law. Yet I appreciate the fact that Marcello cares enough about his sister to risk his life coming here to see her for himself. At least she's more than a paycheck to someone in that God-forsaken family.

"Valentino," he growls, pushing away from the Porsche as I approach the gates. His gaze shifts between me and the men guarding his sister, cold and assessing. "You really expect me to believe she's here by choice just because she walked out here holding your hand?"

"I don't really care what you believe," I say. "You showed up uninvited to my home after your family all but declared war on mine. The only reason I'm standing in front of you now is because she matters to me. You and your beliefs mean nothing."

"We declared war?" His eyebrows shoot up. "You left bodies scattered all over our fucking territory, and then the same night she disappears, a whole pile of them shows up on our doorstep."

"Tommaso Genovese killed the men scattered across your territory," I say. "We had nothing to do with that."

"Right. And I suppose your family didn't kill him, either."

"We admit full responsibility for the bodies left on Emilio's doorstep. We delivered them back to sender," I say with a shrug. "Perhaps next time your family decides to kidnap Rafe's regina and try to keep her from him, they'll think twice."

"And my grandfather?" Marcello growls.

"Violated the law. He's lucky he died quickly," I snap.
