There are moments when I wonder if the entire history of the universe is worth watching my wife strain for words, her body shaking, wishing she were dead, saying, “Why can’t I kill myself?” I am on the bleeding hook to try to find the word, the object. I try elimination: “Is it in the bathroom? Is it a physical object?” Then, I hit on it (again): “Is it your mouth guard?” “Yes!” I soon exhaust every option and cannot find it. I tell Becky, “I cannot find it. We have to wait until tomorrow.” She sits there, head in hands while Sunny stares at her, and God remains silent.
