What in heaven’s name happened? Lucy wondered as she dashed into the dining area with Hannah behind her. “What was that?” she asked, her heart in her throat as she rounded the corner and stopped in her tracks when she saw Stephanie standing with both hands over her mouth.

Thelma stood frozen to a spot in front of the broken vase, a horrified look on her face, and Lucy repeated her question to get her attention.

“Oh my God,” Stephanie exclaimed before Thelma could reply. Stephanie dropped her hands and angled her body to face Thelma.

Stephanie’s brows knotted into a frown, and she jabbed a finger at Thelma as she continued. “You almost killed me.”

Lucy looked from Thelma to Stephanie, trying to understand what had happened with the broken vase on the floor.

“I’m so sorry,” Thelma blurted just before Stephanie huffed, adjusted her shoulder bag, and hurried out of the bakery. When the door closed behind her, Lucy folded her arms over her chest, arched a brow and faced Thelma.

Thelma shuddered and squeezed her eyes shut for a second. “I didn’t try to kill her, I swear it,” she said when she re-opened them.

Hannah stood at the kitchen’s entrance, her hand folded over her chest, and Lucy saw her shrug and walk back into the kitchen before she faced Thelma again.

“What happened?” she asked, contemplating dashing out of the bakery after Stephanie. “How did you break the vase?”

“I’m sorry… I noticed it was out of place, and I was trying to fix it, but it just dropped, and I couldn’t stop the fall. Please, trust me.”

Lucy sighed. She pushed her fingers through her hair and rubbed her forehead for a second. “Stephanie’s a famous reporter from the city, and whatever she tells the world about Sweet Delights is definitely going to stick. Your clumsiness might ruin my business,” she scolded.

Thelma lowered her head, and Lucy released another sigh before she walked past Thelma and headed out of the bakery to find Stephanie. She didn’t think Stephanie would have gone far, so she doubled her steps, hoping to find her.

As a one-time food critic, Lucy was mindful of her customer service because she knew what a critical review could do for a business. Especially one from someone as influential as Stephanie Appleby.

Lucy walked down the first three blocks she passed, scanning her surroundings to see if Stephanie had entered one of the local shops around. She passed a diner and noticed a crowd of locals in front of a bookstore across the street from her.

When she crossed over to the other side, Lucy noticed they were staring at Stephanie inside the bookstore through the windows. Stephanie seemed engrossed in a conversation with a lady, probably the store’s manager. She was holding a book in one hand, making hand gestures with the other as she spoke, and it reminded Lucy of the news report she watched the previous night.

Lucy lifted a hand to rub the back of her neck as she made her way into the store.
