FIFTEEN

On high alert of another werewolf attack, Walker rapped on the door of Keir’s flat and stood clear. No reply and no barking. She knocked again, and peered through the window, but couldn’t see beyond a pair of shabby lace curtains.

“Okay guys,” she said to the uniforms lined up behind her. Two stepped forward brandishing a battering ram between them. They were about to smash the door down, when it opened an inch and a lock of ginger hair fell through the crack.

“Vicky Tomlinson?” Walker asked.

“Who is it?”

“DI Walker from Kilwinnoch station. I have a warrant to search the premises.”

The door opened wider and Walker jumped back. “Where’s the dog?”

“It’s not here,” Vicky Tomlinson said, rubbing her eyes and pulling the cord on a shabby dressing gown, looking like she’d just woken up.

“Can you let us in please?” Walker insisted.

“What now?”

“I’m afraid so.”

“But I’m in bed.”

“Not anymore.”

“The place is a tip,” Vicky yawned.

“Your partner has been arrested,” Walker informed her.

“What for? What’s he done now?” Vicky asked.

“I’ll explain inside.”

Vicky opened the door and Walker pushed past her, followed by the search team.

The twin’s earlier description of the flat was a breach of the trade descriptions act. Full-blown squalid would have been more accurate. The living room was strewn with dirty plates, empty takeaway boxes and crushed beer cans. Every surface including furniture was covered, smeared, stacked or stained with some substance or other. A half-chewed pizza slice was resting on top of the TV with a fag end embedded in the middle of mouldy mozzarella. Walker negotiated the debris through to the kitchen, but when the smell hit her nostrils she retreated back to the relative health spa of the lounge.

“Stephen Keir was arrested this morning for—”

“Where are they going?” Vicky interrupted, chasing after two of the search team heading down the hall. Moments later, she reappeared with a flushed young man in tow, who was wrestling with his shirt.

“Who’s this?” Walker asked in surprise.

“A friend,” Vicky replied, chewing her lower lip.

“What’s your friend’s name?”

“What’s happening?” the disorientated man asked, his wrist still stuck in his sleeve.

“They’re coppers, Russ.” Vicky cut in. “Fuck sake. Can you not ransack the place?” she yelled at a PC who was emptying DVD cases out onto the floor.

“Polis?” The stranger glanced round at the search team busy going through the chaos around them and then he glanced back at the bedroom.

“I’m Detective Walker. We have a warrant to search the flat.”

“If you’re lookin’ for drugs, you’re on a hiding to nothing,” the man replied, taking another furtive squint over his shoulder.

“What’s your name, son?” Walker repeated.

“Russell.”

“Your surname?”

“I dunno if…” He looked at Vicky and back at Walker.

“I shouldn’t really be here.”

“So what’s your relationship with Ms Tomlinson?”

“We’re old pals,” Vicky jumped in. “Russ has been consoling me.”

“Ah, okay,” Walker replied, trying to conceal a smile. “Why consoling?”

“I’ve been so upset about my sister. She’s out of control.” Vicky spun round again. “Who are all these men everywhere? This is upsetting me now.”

“Do you make
