Chapter Seventeen
Vinnie tossed and turned all night, wondering how she had given Diggy the impression that she was stupid and that she was okay with Norhand taking Lavender. She wondered if Diggy would want to continue with the investigation or if she would stay behind and let Vinnie do everything instead. But mostly she thought about what she could do to help the girl.
All this time, Vinnie thought she had been doing the right things and helping to fill the hole that Lavender left behind. But she should have known that there wasn’t anything she could do that would fully fill that in. She wasn’t Diggy’s mother and no amount of maternal auntie love would fill that space.
Once the sun came up, Vinnie decided she could venture downstairs and start a big breakfast. Even if Diggy wasn’t planning on making an appearance downstairs, maybe the smell of bacon would lure her down. But Vinnie told herself that she was not going to mention the fight last night. Sometimes it was best to show that she wasn’t holding any sort of grudge.
When she pushed open the door to the kitchen, she was surprised to find Diggy banging around in the cupboards for the right pots and pans. Diggy looked up sheepishly at the sound of the door.
“I was going to make you breakfast the mortal way to say that I was sorry about last night,” Diggy said. “I think I may have overreacted.”
Vinnie grabbed her favorite apron off of the hook on the wall and made her way over to the stove, biting back all of the sarcastic comments she wanted to make.
“That’s alright,” Vinnie said instead. “It’s a new day and we have things to do.”
Together, the aunt and niece duo cooked up a large breakfast of fried eggs, hash browns, and bacon. Vinnie wanted to gush about how well Diggy was doing cooking things the mortal way, but she thought that might be a bit overboard and result in another fight somehow.
“Do we have any sort of plan for today?” Diggy asked.
Usually, they tried to go into each day on a Halloween Helper case with a plan of who to talk to or what to look for or where to search. But Vinnie didn’t have a plan. In fact, she felt so unprepared that it was almost like having a negative plan somehow. She was tired of cases that turned out to be more complicated than they should have been. She was tired of Norhand’s tricks and surprises. And she was sort of tired of being a Halloween Helper.
Initially, Vinnie had been excited because her Aunt Jemima had always talked about the exciting places she went and the interesting people she met. But all of her cases were interesting in a run-of-the-mill sort of way. They didn’t involved murders and decisions that would shape the future of a large group of people. It was all starting to be too much.
“Hello?” Diggy said. “Earth to auntie.”
“Sorry, I was just lost in thought,” Vinnie said.
