Humpback Whale Research, Lahaina, HI: The Hawaii Whale Research Foundation (P.O. Box 1296, Lahaina, HI 96767; www.hwrf.org; Research Director, Dr. Dan Selden, [email protected]). The Hawaii Whale Research Foundation (HWRF), a nonprofit corporation since 1994, is staffed by skilled, committed volunteers who conduct field research on humpback whale social affiliation, behavior, and communication. Volunteer opportunities exist for independent researchers who want to work with Hawaiian humpback whales. Off-island volunteers are expected to make a minimum commitment of four weeks.

Applicants should be researchers and doctoral students interested in marine mammals, and whales in particular. Data collection involves note taking, photographing identifying features, and videotaping whale behavior. HWRF accepts a small number of research associates to assist with data collection from January through May.

Staff members, including visiting researchers, are not paid, and travel and living expenses are your responsibility. HWRF may be able to assist you in finding reasonable housing.

Immersion Excursion: Lahaina

Lahaina is in West Maui, in Maui County, Hawaii, where you can enjoy beautiful sunsets and numerous water activities. Whales are visible from Mala Wharf, the harbor just north of town. There are great restaurants, shopping, diving, and whale watching boats available. Ka‘anapali Beach is Maui’s equivalent of Waikiki, just not as big or busy. The island of Maui offers many recreational and sightseeing options: helicopter rides, volcano sightseeing flights, ATV tours, sailing cruises, hiking, kayaking and snorkeling adventures, deep-sea fishing trips, surfing and sailboarding lessons, paragliding, and horseback riding tours.
