I donât know how long I doze in and out but when I open my eyes, Iâm still on the plane thatâs now landing. Feeling groggy, I turn my head, happy when it responds to my command, and see Dianne sitting beside me.
âAh, youâre awake. Excellent. Once weâve landed, Tom here will show you where youâll be staying.â
I resist the urge to snort. She makes it sound like Iâm on vacation and Iâll be checking into a five-star resort. I suspect thatâs not the case.
I donât speak. I honestly have nothing to say to this woman who might look put together but is as delusional as they come.
Picking my battles for now, I wait for Tom, the giant asshole, to unstrap me and stand up. He tugs my arm so I follow him, keeping myself docile and giving them no reason to suspect I might be scanning for the earliest opportunity to escape.
As I climb down the steps, the frigid temperatures slap me in the face, making me suck in a sharp breath. When I blow it out, I can literally see it in front of my face.
I look around but there isnât much to see beyond a runway and a small building in the distance. Beyond that is nothing but trees, topped with a dusting of snow.
A sleek black car is the only vehicle besides the plane. With how cold it is, I donât complain when Iâm herded toward it and unceremoniously shoved into the back seat.
Iâm surprised when Dianne doesnât climb in with us. Maybe she has more victims to round up. Either way, itâs one less person to have to get away from so Iâm not complaining.
As soon as Tom climbs in beside me and shuts the door, the driver pulls away before we are even strapped in, clearly in a hurry to get us to wherever it is weâre heading.
Tom doesnât say a word, which suits me fine as I take in the area. We must be in the middle of nowhere because weâve been driving for about thirty minutes before I see a building of any kind. Even then, we pass by it so quickly that I canât tell from the sleek structure if itâs residential or industrial.
We donât stop and my chances of escape begin to look bleaker and bleaker.
Finally, after weâve been on the road for close to an hour, we pull up to a mansion. In all the scenarios I had come up with of the places my torture and demise would take a place, a gorgeous stone mansion with balconies adorning bedrooms and lush green ivy climbing the walls wasnât one of them.
When the car stops, I wait for further instruction.
Of course, those instructions donât come verbally, they come by way of Tomâs large hand tugging me out of the car.
I stumble a little, barely regaining my footing before he drags me up the stone steps. The wide dark wooden door opens before Tom even reaches it.
âThat will be all, thank you,â the voice says in a short clipped tone.
