Jace snarls, slamming the door on the empty bathroom. âSheâs gone.â
Sound rumbles in the back of his throat as he begins prowling, followed closely by Theo. The edges of my vision flicker as the dragon in me fights to come out. But the last thing I need is to shift, as much as I might want to.
âDoes she even have a weapon?â I snarl.
My voice is still rough around the edges. I canât remember how long I was down in the darkness of the basements, listening to that song haunt me. The world out here seems too bright, and I keep having to concentrate just to get words out properly.
Between the looming rut and my own painful memories, itâs getting really fucking difficult to focus. But itâs been marginally better since they found me⦠The break feels dormant, instead of imminent.
Jaceâs touch somehow eased the pain, and Iâm beyond asking why.
âHer fangs?â Jace suggests. âThatâll give her some hypnosis, if he isnât an alpha.â
âItâs not enough,â Theo counters.
Heâs right. Itâs not enough. My soul flares, begging to take control and save our mate. But I fight him down, closing my eyes until I can see with nothing more than human sight.
Iâll need him soon, Iâm sure. But not yet. For now, I need a little longer with clear thought, and my vitality doesnât allow for much human clarityânot that I have so much of that these days, either.
More than the other vitalities, dragons are⦠well. Power. My soul belongs to the kind of magic that hasnât existed within this world for centuries. And when the shift occurs, it takes with it the sight Iâm used to, in favor of magic. Literally.
I canât afford that loss just yet, not until Jel is safe.
Fear rises in my chest, followed quickly by anger. Doesnât she know weâre here for her? Locking her in that bathroom was to keep her safe, and now sheâs endangered both herself and her brother by splitting our attention.
Why does she keep running from us? From our guidance? I know sheâs no omega, but Iâve never met a beta less willing to submit.
Weâre a pack, and we should be together.
I snort, two plumes of smoke rising to obscure my vision. I think thatâs the first time Iâve uttered the word, even to myself.
âWhatâs the fastest way to this shoe factory?â I ask, my voice catching on the fire in my throat. The bookshelf in front of me singes.
Theo throws a glass of water on it and eyes me warily. âWell, technicallyâ¦â
Ah. He has a point.
But Iâve never let anyone⦠ride me⦠before.
Theo and Jace watch me, twin gazes of apprehension on their faces, and it would almost be hilarious if we werenât running out of time.
âMeet me on the roof,â I tell them, then I fling open Jelâs window, kick my legs over, and drop as the world turns to fire.
The ground rushes to meet me, bronze edged and burning as my sight changes to encompass all that a dragon sees.
