CHAPTER 16

Shinji

The ghostly mist’s white particles drifted through the office, glinting under the light of the early sun, and pressed on Shinji’s entire body. He sat hunched over his cluttered desk, surrounded by stacks of files and the looming spirit of Yoshizawa Akane.

After he’d convinced her not to haunt her child, she joined him at home, and barely let Shinji sleep with her heavy aura and demands for justice. While his reiryoku deterred her somewhat, the pressure of Akane and Madoka’s auras didn’t subside. Just as Shinji had managed to keep Madoka’s ghostly mist under control, now with Akane’s presence, it was becoming more difficult to do so.

Madoka stood in the corner of the office, watching Akane with a mix of curiosity and admiration—which was an alarming thing because allied ghosts were more dangerous. Shinji understood their desire for revenge, and if he could offer the criminal on a plate right now, he would. He hoped they wouldn’t take the more aggressive path of finding justice for themselves because then Shinji would have to act and either hold them under a barrier of energy at home or send them to the other side even if their business here wasn’t finished. And he wanted to do neither because he wanted them to leave this world at peace, not full of hatred.

“You’re not doing anything,” Akane said, slapping the desk—or intending to. Her hands fell through and she groaned, then leaned forward, her white eyes full of hatred. “Stop slumping and find my killer. You promised!”

“We’re working the case,” Shinji repeated for the third time this morning. “You need to have patience. Homicides aren’t solved in seconds.”

She blew cold air through the nose, and a whole new surge of heavy aura flooded through Shinji, pressing against his chest as though it tried to suffocate him. Shinji brought out his spiritual energy, surrounding both himself, as a measure of protection, and the office to try and keep the temperature at a reasonable level. But Akane and Madoka’s auras together pinched and pushed, forcing Shinji to focus more and drain his energy faster. He was glad Kazuya had renewed Teruo’s protective wards. With the situation as it was right now, Shinji would’ve likely killed Teruo by feeding on his life force.

“Please,” Shinji said, his voice hoarse from the cold, “let us work. Draw back the ghostly mist. At this rate, we’ll freeze to death before we find your killer.”

Akane looked around her and she only now realized how foggy it was inside the office. “I don’t know how to do that.”

Shinji raised a palm toward Akane. “May I?”

She frowned, then gave a reluctant nod. Shinji smoothed a wave of reiryoku over her and Madoka’s ghostly auras. The auras’ heaviness told him enough about the resentment both women bore and it took Shinji a good few minutes to dissipate the thick mist and let the warmth from the sunny day outside back into the room. He let out a sigh of relief as his skin warmed up.
